Oregon and Washington BS thread

In the middle of nowhere or aka Bumfuck, Or... Its between Sandy & Molalla at the base of Goat Mountain... I'm literaly 5 minutes from Goat.

 

I thought you wanted to meet at the Fred Meyer really bad?


I gave a short list in the meet thread on what might be needed.

ATV Permit mandatory - yes, they check
4x4
shovel
flashlight
CB recommended
Recovery gear such as recovery straps, hi-lifts, etc. are recommended, but I doubt you will use them.
snack is good, there's no where to get food once you are out.

 

I might be going up to Tinkham off I90 for some snow on Sunday. They received a bunch of snow but it looks like it rained all day and the rest of the week will be rain as well so that might not happen.

I could be up for this. I went up to Tinkham the Sunday before last, right after New Years when it was freezing, but didn't go too far before I turned around because it was pure ice.

Why do you have to buy a permit just to do a little wheelin? Is it because you don't pay sales tax?

 

Each state is different. Pay $11 in Oregon and you get a 2-year permit to go anywhere in the state. In Washington sometimes you don't need anything, sometimes you need to pay for a park permit. Back east there's some states that ding you $25 per visit.

 

It's true, in Wa you gotta pay to park at trailheads. I think it's a $5 day use fee. I've never done it. Course, I don't park either. Just cruise along the trail at 1 mph.

 

I've heard of guys getting nabbed as they come off the trails.

 

Honestly, in all the years I've been wheelin, I've not seen that. The permit I referred to is specifically a parking permit, and oh by the way, you can hike the trail once you've paid for the parking permit.

The only 'wheelin' trail that I know of that has a use permit requirement is the Naches trail up by Greenwater. I have seen DNR vehicles up in there but they usually don't mess with anybody unless they are being rowdy or causing damage by going off trail.

 

I was up there the same day. It was icy at the bottom but the top had some nice snow. I pulled a stuck Subaru out of the way and then there was a Ford Exploder on bald tires that was stuck 2/3rds of the way up that plugged the whole trail. There were some pretty pissed off people up there. 4 of us were going up and there were about 10 coming down with one Explorer blocking everyone. We got him of to the side a little so people could get by. I don't know if they ever got the Explorer out of there since they abandoned it. He didn't have anything for me to strap my winch to so I didn't He didn't have any tow points so no one could really pull him out.

 

so 9am at fred meyer. What Fred Meyer? (intersection, address, whatever you got)

as far as what to bring, i agree strap, shackles, light, possibly hi-lift. I'll trust someone is bringing a lift as mine is a 63" and out at my brothers house. I don't anticipate anyone needing one but could be smart to have.

I don't have a hi-lift or winch, just a strap.

a light
a knife
4 tire chains
a CB
a compressor
fire extinguisher
spare boots, change of clothes
working gloves, ski gloves
I think I have flares
some water, clif bars
first aid kit
small socket set with a screwdriver
a t-shirt rag

 

The coast range is suppose to see in between 3-5 inches of rain tomorrow with a freezing level of 5500ft. I'm letting you guys know that I'm not planning on making it cause I've never (shame on me) done the rear diff breather mod and there are probably going to be some deep holes with all the water. I'll pass on TSF until I can get my breather relocated... Looks like I may have something to do for a mod day. Good luck guys it should be fun!

 

I didn't have the breather done when I went through the puddle in my sig, and that's the deepest I went through at TSF. TSF trails are generally on the side of hills with excellent drainage, I would not be concerned in the slightest.
