I have been out to Tillamook State forest many times in my TJ that I sold a few years back. There are countless off roads "roads" to wander on. The trails in the browns camp area are all marked. In the TJ with sliders and bad 31"s I had no problems on any trail marked "easy". I only ever went out solo and learned as I went.

Just this past Sunday went out there for the first time in years. First time in my stock 2020 Tacoma off-road, solo. I wanted to do cedar tree trail. Couldn't find a trail map and was wandering around. Eventually found part of cedar tree trail. It was a lot tighter than I remember in the jeep. Was doing fairly well at first stock aired down. It was very muddy out and came to a very tight spot. Ended up sliding sideways on the trail and coming within 2' of a tree mid truck.

    20200209_142227.jpg20200209_143248.jpg 20200209_141922.jpg

At this point it would have been very easy to do serious body damage to my brand new truck. I was able to use sticks and wood nearby to add traction to the very muddy area.

    20200209_142232.jpg

Very carefully I got myself out. Backed out of the rest of the trail. Was at to the left of the tree in this pic before backing out.
    20200209_145820.jpg

Honestly the most stressed I have ever been while off-roading. In my TJ I had sliders and this trail was fairly easy. With no sliders in the Tacoma it was a lot harder. I am sure I could have made it in the Tacoma with silders though. I likely could have made it without and a good spotter but I was the only vehicle and my fiance is not confident enough to do the spotting.

That aside, the non trail off road alone are a lot of fun. I saw snow for the first time this year up there.

I am talking with TacoTim85 about going out again this coming up Sunday, the 16th. Would love to get a group run going, you should join us! Going to start a thread about it tomorrow I think.

I haven't tried the factory option at all yet. Will do that!

It's not too hard to find your way out of the browns camp area though. You can find trail maps on the info boards, or if they are all out like they were this past weekend, you can stop and ask any sheriff you see. I ran into one, and asked him for a trail map and he had one for me. The sheriffs around here are the nicest you will find.

Getting out and doing things like this are a huge part of the reason I bought a tacoma. The PNW is amazing if you get out there and go looking!!!

Thought you meant, 2", which is pretty normal for PNW trails :D Get some sliders, they saved my truck countless times against trees and rocks. Kickouts work as pivot points around trees too in tight situations.

thank you both for the feedback. It’s those tight spots that worry me for sure. I’ve got sliders and good 31.5” A/T tires. I’m convincing myself I need to go. it seems like a lot of Jeep guys go there, but don’t see as many videos or post of Tacoma’s. I know they do it, we seriously need a group run for stock or close to stock Tacos.

We (when I lived that way...) do an annual TFS camping trip during the summer. The trails always changed year in/out a little bit. Jeeps and UTVs would go destroy a lot of the good trails and make them more difficult. But I think the only incident we ever had with TFS in those years was someone backing into another person and breaking some taillights (@Benson X I think was part of that...)

In my defense - I was distracted by someone behind me honking their loud-ass Cadillac horns (@stikle :D).

There has been a few damaged Tacos over the years down there, mainly minor/cosmetic stuff - some more significant damage, but no one has had to be towed home or trailered out (not like Tahuya :anonymous: ).

There was guy that flopped his 2nd Gen on his side after trying to ride his passenger tire on a (small-ish) rock. I've dented a few panels.

Still love the crowd sourced engine replacement... only to get it from Insurance. I need to look into this in case my Tundra decides to blow up.

I'm never gonna live that down, huh?

Just stay out of deep water or get a snorkel and you should be good. But, if you need a good insurance guy, let me know.

Did you actually expect to live that down? I miss you guys up there. Unfortunately the wife doesn't want anything to do with the PNW going forward. Something about the rain that she hates... and I miss.

Yeah - I've been hearing similar things from Sandy. But once the sun comes out, the mood magically changes and everything is right in the cosmos. Typical fair-weather fan Washintonian

I say....Bring on the RAIN! Bring on the GREY! Bring on the Depression and Sadness! Make these California transplants regret moving here!

Been researching sliders. Going to go with bolt ons. Anyone know of a local shop that makes them in the Portland area?

Check out Metal-Tech, they are in Newberg. They also have a less expensive line called OPOR (Outpost Off Road). Might check with IronMan as well, they are local.

$710 for bolt on, with kickout and step plates. By far the best price I have seen. They even have DOM outer rails. Nice man, thanks for the info! Going to seriously consider these. Just need to save up $$.

And no shipping because you can just go pick them up, that right there saves a lot.

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Don't know if anyone is interested, but tickets for the Seattle Dragon's (XFL team) are cheap. Picked up 3 tickets for Saturday's game. 45-yard line six rows up for $64 per ticket.
