I'm not super familiar with how much rental costs look these days in surrounding areas so i might not be of too much help.
Personally, if i knew we'd have the option to work remote years ago i would've looked at homes out in Cle Elum area which you could check out? -- Would entirely depend on your job/field of work etc in some respects to where you want to live

Upon first glance, that looks like an awesome area. I haven't heard great things about Yakima but Cle Elum looks like an awesome distance from the big city and the National Park/Forest. Thanks for the recommendation, I really appreciate it!

Yeah its only probably about 1.5 hours to Seattle/Bellevue, but the climate is different and less rainy than Seattle. Not a tiny town per say but its got enough amenities and its close to a lot to things to do outdoors. Tons of lakes in the area that i probably go to the most in the summer than anywhere else in the state to go kayaking etc.

I can't imagine rent out there would be too crazy. Again, not super familiar with the job market out there but good luck!

I have a coworker commute from Cle Elum into Redmond every day for work if the pass is open. Cle Elum has it's share of difficulties though, the gas station is commonly out of fuel or you find yourself driving down to the pump at 11:00 at night to fill up right after the tanks are filled. Safeway gest ravaged by campers and people traveling throughout the year and is often out of basic necessities. My coworker buys her groceries over here and drives it home because the food supply in Cle Elum can be limiting.

Yikes, didnt know about any of the issues regarding food supply or even fuel. I've never stayed in the area long enough to need any of those things but that absolutely makes sense.

Being it is one of the first/last stops on the other side of the pass it seems like a lot of people roll through and fill up their rv's and toys with food and fuel. For that reason alone I try to avoid being part of the problem as I have heard it from both her and a couple friends that live over there.

Solstice campfire with some friends, 40 or so miles east of Bend. Fresh tracks to the fire ring for the last 8 miles or so, nice. Did not see another personIMG_4001.jpg

I’m out in Maple Valley, WA. It’s a rapidly growing “small” town with a school district that’s in the top 10 in WA. It’s about an hour from downtown Seattle, 45 min from Bellevue and close to i90 if you want to hit the slopes or 410 if you wanna go wheeling. Secrets been out for a while so housing prices have increased a lot in the last few years though.

MV is a great spot agreed, I take my kid out there weekly for her class and it’s a nice area.

Having lived in the north metro area for a while, you might take a look at Granite Falls and Snohomish areas. Convenient to the Seattle metro area, but also good access north (Cascades), east and to I-5. (I-5 is still pretty bad as you move towards Seattle). Small town and rural feeling with a good assortment of places to shop, eat, and drink. Housing prices started increasing at a crazy rate during the pandemic, but there seems to be plenty of new apartments going up and for rent in these same areas at the moment. In the end, based on traffic patterns, you may want to live closer to your job(s) rather than further away.

Thanks a bunch guys, I really appreciate the input from some locals. I have read that teachers in the Seattle area make some of the best wages in the country, but I suspect with the high minimum wage (and cost of living?) it's sort of a wash. I'm also curious, how bad was the smoke for all of you guys this past summer? I had a friend move to Seattle last spring and he said it was practically nonexistent which was refreshing to hear. Here in SW Montana it was brutal and basically wasted the whole season, another reason I'm looking to move.

It wasn't too bad this summer but there have been years that it was bad for months, like don't go outside if you can avoid it bad.

The western side of the Cascades has traditionally had low smoke intrusion due to the westerly prevailing air currents. That has changed in the past couple of years with north flows bringing smoke up from the south that can persist up to a week, but no where near as bad as further south and east. (Consider a place to live that has AC?). Right now the area seems to be in a shifting "atmospheric river" event. Lots of moisture, but so far not too much in the lowlands turning to snow. This next week may change that. The whole metro area does not handle snow and ice events very well, but Cascade skiers love it.

Had to clear the snow from infront of the cameras once already, looks like I'll have to do it again before the day is up.
