No kidding. It's like they are happy to admit they did a half ass job of it and then expect him to accept that as a reasonable explanation for a legitimate concern about fluids that should not be dripping from his vehicle. And then top it off by saying if he hadn't done them a favor by removing the skid plates then they could've covered up the shoddy workmanship so he wouldn't notice.

Just an update after picking it up and they "cleaned it". one day later Its now back at the dealer because its still leaking. My money is they cracked the oil filter housing.

The interesting thing about the tacoma is that the drain plug and oil filter are not really in a spot that would make a mess when you drain them. We used to have a honda pilot and the oil filter was above the passenger lower control arm. Every time you changed the oil it made a huge mess all over the suspension.

Interesting the difference in oil filter location between the 3.5L and 4.0L. I like how it's top mounted on the 4.0L, so easy to get to. But it being on the bottom next to the oil pan is convenient too. From that angle it looks so close to the CV, which doesn't seem ideal.

Having both an '06 4.0L and now a new '16 3.5L, I'd prefer the 4.0L location, since thanks to the Fumoto valve I've had on the '06 for 12 years, I've probably spent at most 60 mins underneath the truck for all 33 of the oil changes I've likely done in that truck. I'm expecting to spend that much time under the truck in the next 3 oil changes (not a lot, I know... but still)

It all sounds better than a 1st gen. I hated changing the oil on that truck. Had to reach the oil filter through the wheel well and it made a mess every time. Top mounted on the 2nd gen is so nice.

Did you check the oil level before you took it back?

Oh man yeah I remember reaching up there from underneath the truck past the exhaust header and trying not to burn myself. Always had to have a handful of paper towels to for the ensuing mess. Got so annoyed with it I think we ended up installing a relocation kit.

I'd rather change a subaru filter than deal with trying to drop my skid

I took it back a second time because it was still leaking. Turned out to be a ripped oil filter gasket, or at least thats what they said. Looks like it has a new oil filter housing but who knows. As far as the dealer, I live in SW Wa and took it to the nearest toyota dealer. ;). I also have a venza and have had the oil overfilled EVERY time I take it in.

This is the reason I think they can take their "toyota care" and shove it...I'll do my own maintenance.

The funny thing is I always remove the skid plates to be nice and make it easier on the techs. The first time I took it in the service mgr said "it looks worse than it really is since you drive around without skidplates". I explained why I took them off and had I not done that the truck would have leaked a ton more before seeing it.
