I can't seem to shake the desire to get a truck again. And I really don't want to get a gas burner again. Diesel is just far too appealing. If I got one, I would get tried a true - the 7.3 Powerstroke. Anyone want to throw some scary financial numbers or known failure parts my way to try to change my mind?

Keep in mind, I'm already driving a car that gets about 16-17 MPG running on PREMIUM which is currently only a few cents off per gallon from Diesel.

Yeah, the 7.3 Powerstroke is the Ford motor.

I believe the ultimate truck would be the older cummins 5.9 motor, with a allison tranny from the chevy, all in a Ford truck.

Lee, the 04 range of Dodge are where its at. But, if you want a Ford then as long as you find a STOCK 7.3 your good to go. But, be wheary on previous owners. Since 7.3 are the most modded. If ya can find one owned by an older person(senior) then your golden.

Yeah, I like to think I know how to look for an abused or modified vehicle. But Diesels are a relatively new world to me. I have been reading and drooling on them for at least 6 years though.

Rob - have you been around 7.3's very much? What kind of mileage do they tend to see? I see some guys saying 15 unloaded around town and some guys saying 12. I could live with 15-16 around town. 12 is pretty bad tho.

Yeah, I would leave engine stock. And would only up wheel size by a couple inches. Would be worth the slight MPG drop for me. We'll see. Going to talk to a dealer in Milwaukie this weekend.

I'm mounting my CB in the center counsel. I don't want to see it. Just picked up a relentless CB mount!

Ding ding we have a winner. I don't know if it has to be an older cummins (because I simply don't know), but otherwise this setup is basically the holy grail.

I think as long as you avoid the NEW NEW stuff, you're pretty safe. Just the newer emissions stuff makes the trucks unreliable and not nearly as efficient as they used to be. :(

Umm... gas is $4.09 up here and diesel is more? :p

If you get a full size though, there's no other option but diesel in my mind. Not even a question.

So I'm getting crazy thoughts as well... starting to consider buying a house. The initial payment ($ down plus all that startup stuff) is out of my reach without help, but the monthly payments on a 15 year is so low I could practically double up.

Yeah... Diesel here is within $0.07 of premium.

Even getting an F-150 or something, I feel like it's stupid when you could get the same (or probably better) economy in a 250 or 350 with a diesel. Plus, much sweeter truck. Maintenance costs are certainly higher though.

What CB did you get? Are you going to make a false shelf? Is the rentless one the one that mounts on the hood?
