Hey guys I have some lights I haven't installed yet..but I wanna see them light up...they have a black and white wire coming out the back...black is ground correct? Can't I touch the black wire to where I have other things grounded, then touch the white wire to the positive terminal and it will light up right? Just wanna double check..and is that dangerous?

I've done it with led bars... not ideal as you aren't fused and could potentially blow the light out.... but eh, *should* be ok.

12 Volt is not polarity specific in general... But many LEDs are. Most have reverse polarity protection circuits in place.

Black is "probably" ground.

Fusing protects against excessive current draw. In other words, you're LED bar probably won't explode. Although you should incorporate one into your circuit when you mount it permanently.

 

It will most likely send too much amperage and blow the light. If you were to leave it on, prolonged connections melt the wire. That all said, a really slight momentary connection just to make sure they come on (like a half second) probably wojldnt blow the light

The current available from any battery is dependent, to a relative degree, on the resistance of the circuit to which it is connected...

You have a 12 Volt battery. Amperage is determined by voltage and resistance in a circuit.

"Voltage can be compared to water pressure in a pipe, but amperage can be compared to the actual amount of water flow. The size of the pipe can be compared to the resistance of a circuit."

Fuses protect the wiring going to the load not the load itself. Touching it to the battery will not cause too much amperage to go to the light as the resistance in the light (load) is set for a 12VDC system. You can do that and be fine. Black is most likely your ground. But as was just said you can reverse bias a diode and it will not work. It won't break as its rated for the voltage supplied. Amps are simply resistance/voltage. So since its 12 volts (more like 14) divided by something like 50 ohms you have around 5amps. Plugging to directly to the battery or anything else at 12 volts isn't going to change the amperage going to the light. Unless you use something like a step down transformer but that's another story. The fuse keeps the wires from overheating if current somehow finds a path the ground without some kind of load.

In other words, if it was my light bar I would have already touched black to ground a the other to a source and tested it out without any worries. Just like you wanted.
