Cloaking mode for the secret spots :anonymous:

Good luck though man, it’s a tough river to dial in. Throw midges when in doubt. We’re headed to the crooked today to get some confidence back.

Yeah, couldn’t get anything to bite today either. I located a nice sized trout under a log and worked it for 1.5 hrs using multiple flies and a couple of midges. Nothing. Prolly not the best river to build confidence. But a beautiful place regardless.

The Crooked is fishing really well and I highly recommend it if you’re new to fly fishing - easy to cast and normal to catch 20-40 in a day (usually small ones though). They just lowered the flows from the dam but still good.

I was just going to say the Metolious is my favorite river, but it can be super tough at times. Crooked and middle/lower deschutes will definitely get you more tugs.

The Fall can be difficult, but there are toads in there. Upper Deschutes & Little Deschutes are pretty good fisheries as well. My buddy just texted me that the Salmonflies are stating to get active on the Lower Deschutes right now too.

I wanna pick the brains of you fly fishing guys…

I have a 7wt rod currently but would like to look into a 3-5wt rod. I don’t usually catch big fish with flys and feel that my 7wt is overkill…. Thoughts on that idea as well as maybe a recommendation on a new rod/reel that won’t kill the pocketbook.

7 weight seems too big to me for trout fishing. I have two rods I use for trout. Both 5 weight.
8.5 feet and a ten-footer with a fighting butt. I use the 10 footer on "big" water and the 8.5 on smaller streams. That said, you ought to be able to cast well in most conditions(wind) with the 7 weight and handle most trout and even steelhead with it.

That’s kind of what I’m getting at I don’t steelhead fish with my flyrod and I haven’t caught a fish over 13 inches with my flyrod either so seven weight is a little big

Douglas DXF 9 ft 5 wt. It’s probably the best mid-tier 5 wt available. It is insanely good for the price (we’re talking fly fishing... so the upper tier “roof” is about $1,000).

For a reel the new Redington Run reel is great for the money. Anything by Galvan is good as well. Personally all of my “client rods” have a Nautilus X reel that is a bit pricey. Since you’re catching small guys you can get away with a click n pawl just fine. You really only need a drag if you’re throwing larger flies at bigger fish (like red sides, browns, steelhead, etc.). Just depends on your tippet strength. Lots of guys buy a reel with a drag system just to fish 5X... and wonder why they break off.
