@FashTaco @CascadianAngler it sounds like my buddy wants to get together the first part of my camping trip so I’ll be free from like Tuesday on probably. I’ll have to check with the other people going… 6/18-6/26 is the dates any I will most likely already be on that side of the hill as we are talking about camping near prineville res

Been lurking this thread since it's inception with the thought of getting out on the water more to fish. Work and life commitments have put a damper on that plan until just recently. Really going to push to get out and fish more than I have in a very long time.

Fished several of the bigger trout rivers around the area with some luck (Metolius, Crooked, Deschutes) and quite a few smaller rivers in the Mt. Hood area catching a whole mess of small to medium sized trout. Hoping to just focus on a couple bodies of water this summer

You guys should camp on the Crooked River just below the dam. There are like 6-7 campgrounds and they are only $8 a night. Plus, they are all on the river and that river is a great place to get experience. Not the biggest fish around, but they are redsides and the whitefish you catch in the Crooked are super good size too. Just look at the map between prineville and the reservoir and you can zoom in and see all the campgrounds. Lots of BLM land down past the Reservoir too if you want to wheel and free camp.

Bonus: you can also fish smallmouth at the reservoir if you want as well. It’s a great area to explore, and it’s no big secret, so I don’t feel like anyone will yell at me for blowing up a spot lol

Ended up on the Crooked Saturday evening and managed to hook up a little guy. Still better than getting skunked. Got em on a nymph. Cant believe how beautiful that spot is and can’t believe it took so long for me to check it out. But then i realized i only had my Tacoma for only 3 years and so many places i can go. Thanks for suggestions guys!

It’s a fun little river and the rock formations out there are beautiful.

Yes it was, Cant wait to get back and do some Camping.

From what i can tell this past weekend, quite a few spots were open. Although i dont know if its just the time of year. Is there a place to pay at each site since its first come first served?

We went 3 weeks ago and arrived mid day Saturday. Every single campground had at least a few spots. I’ve only really fished it in the spring and fall. It’s really hot and plenty of snakes in the summer months. Winter would be a cool time to check it out though. It’s a tailwater out of Prineville Reservoir, so it essentially fishes year round except for a few days, for the guys who haven’t been there. That’s why it’s a great place to go just about any time.

Yea one of the reasons we picked that area is because one of the guys going with is a big time fly fisher (like all he does) and so instead of camping up past the dam I’m probably going to show up Thursday and save a couple of spots come Friday morning for everyone else 4 of us total

Congrats! Is that your first fish on a fly rod?

@Toywoodsguy82 there’s some public land above the reservoir/river you could always camp in if the sites are full. I’ve been trying to find an accessible spot that overlooks the river. I got close but still had to hike a few hundred yards to this view:

that would be cool but I got 4 guys going… one with a pop up tent trailer and one with a boat… need camp spots for this trip but other trips I’m ok with dry camping

Hit the Fall after work today and caught a great hatch and my best day yet there - nonstop dry fly takes!

Nah. Caught some before. Im new to all the technical stuff. Learning names of flys, and when to use wet/dry. And coming to ‘need’ more gear. Lol

Question on other fish: Anyone have any general spots for large mouth/small mouth?Either from the bank or kayak(prefer kayak spots) I’ve hit up Willy, Hagg but only managed to mainly catch small mouth. I used to live in the San Joaquin Valley and nothing here feels like the large mouth down there. Kinda missing the feeling.

Not looking for any secret spots but i just come to realize the best fishing for Bass is if you belong to a club and get to fish private lakes.
