Does load range affect sidewall puncture resistance? I was lead to believe ply count was part of load ratings, which lead to the assumption it might also create a more durable sidewall for offroading.

 

Yes. Load range affects sidewall puncture as well as ply count. I don't really do any hardcore stuff so I don't really need to be running load range D tires. I want lighter weight stuff so load C would be legit since the duratrac already weighs less than the competition

 

yup. I got them to save weight. I’ve also had zero durability issues aired down to 15 psi off-road.

 

Shit! I had no idea! If the load range D tires weigh 54 pounds a tire, I'd imagine a load range C weights maybe 50-52? Cutting 2-4 pounds of rotational mass out per corner would be huge lol

 

Probably also has less tread depth... that may not matter to you, but just an FYI.

 

Ehhh, I don't know if they would have less tread depth, I have a feeling @crashnburn80 would know for some reason though. I know for a fact they would be made out of a softer compound, so they definitely wouldn't last as long as my D load tires.

 

Typically lower load ratings come with a shallower tread depth. I noticed this a lot when tire shopping. Falkens and Nittos are good examples of this.

 

Hard to find a weight. One source shows 51lbs another shows 59lbs. 18/32 depth though

Yep, not hard to check tread depth from the manufacture. It can vary sometimes, but it is typically sidewall construction that adds to the weight.

Whelp, I guess I know what tire's Im buying next. Love them in the snow, and they were great in the rain up until the 40k mile point tbh.

 

I don't really believe any published tire weights though, only what my scale tells me. My tires were published as 56lbs and are actually 66lbs

 

I weighed my duratracs when I got them and they were 54.6 ish, so round down, still if the range C tires were 3 pounds lighter thats a 12 pound savings in rotational mass. Thats huge lol

If anyone wants to go the pizza cutter route, I’m going to change out my 255/80/17 Cooper ST Maxx’s pretty soon. I have five and have used the spare in the rotation. I figure I’ve put 15k or so on them. I’ll measure the tread depth on them all and post pics if anyone is interested. They’ve been used for hunting and camping and stuff but haven’t been abused. I’m in Spokane but could meet someone around Ellensburg.

Edit to add: looks like I had these mounted in Sept 2019. I bought a grocery getter in June 2020 so the truck stopped getting driven other than hauling and hunting runs after that. There are probably about 20k miles on the tires. I’ll update with tread depth soon.

 

FYI, my 285/70/17 Cooper Rugged Treks E-load are only 57 lbs... I'm happy with them so far.
