I had Mule quote me to regear my 2nd gen. $3600?! Is that covid tax or what? I remember researching a year or two ago it $2600 was expensive!

Had mine done a year ago at Auburn Car Repair and Offroad and it was just under $3200 before tax, so about the same as your current quote (assuming yours included tax). What's their wait time like now? I always hear it's crazy trying to get in there.

Another shop around Portland quoted me low 4k.....$3600 isn't too bad with Mule's reputation. I'll be near CA in a month, so trying to take advantage of the $1950 out the door labor/part deal at PremierWestGear group buy.

Edit - just got off the phone with PremierWestGear, 1950 OTD booked, with gear break-in so I don't have to stop a billion times on the way back to OR.

    Is that with a locker?

no...with a locker is a bit more. That 1500 (1750 w/locker) for labor is rough

How does gear break in work? They drive your rig 500 miles and change the fluid before giving it back?

I think it's more like drive 50 miles, let the truck cool, rinse/repeat for 500 miles then change fluid. I think what he is quoting is the REM polishing which basically does the break in for you.

No, i was talking about the post I quoted. They said the shop was doing the break-in, so he wouldn't have to. I didn't see how that was possible?

No they polish the gears. The $4k quote shop also offered this as well.

"REM Polishing is $300/set. It strengthens the gears and eliminates the 500 mile break-in cycle"

Mule and Auburn Car Repair and Offroad both have labor discounts through Avants membership. Depending on how much labor is, it could literally pay for a membership and then some. The price I listed above for my regear did not include the 200-ish I got off.

    https://www.avants.com/partners#off-road

*note, i believe they are both 10% off labor, not the 15% listed for ACR.

My savings from mule through avants when I regeared paid for the membership itself. I also got xpel clear bra put on my wife’s car which saved another 80 dollars or so too.

Awesome. Thanks. I always feel like i'm "advertising" when I mention Avants. But they've been a lot of fun, and I've thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at their events. Seem a good group.

If you can pull your own diffs and take them in to the shop in buckets you can save a ton on labor. I pulled my front diff and dropped it off at Nitro Gear in Cashmere and it was about 2000 parts and labor if i remember right, with 1000 of that being a harrop locker.

Just the front diff, read the post again my friend.

That’s a bummer to hear, it was about 3 years ago I did my regear and Nitro was great about everything, I was bullshitting mountain bike trails with the owner Carl when I picked up my diff and he gave me a bunch of swag too

Reading is truly fundamental... that makes a lot more sense. For a moment I was kicking myself for not going that route.
