man, found this thread a bit too late. Would've been the perfect candidate for my designated bike rack swingout.

    Hi Jon,

I'm very interested in your vehicle for sale on CL. Is it still available?

How is it commuting in the morning and evening rush hour traffic?

Any issues parallel parking in downtown?

I'm thinking of using this as an Uber vehicle, what type of gas mileage can I expect?

I have cash in hand, but I'm just not sure it'll work for my intended use. Would you mind if I took it on an extended test drive? I'll have it back to you no later than the end of September. At that time, I'll make my final decision as to whether it fits my lifestyle.

    Thanks
    -Bert

That's funny, I like your style! Wish I'd thought of it.

But there are some rather serious questions that one should consider. I'd LOVE to own this thing, but I think there are some very real and practical roadblocks to ownership:
1.) You'll likely have to pay cash, or finance through non-traditional methods. Your typical "car loan" isn't likely to be an option (too old, value vs. age, value mostly from custom modifications, etc.) If financed, the loan interest rate is going to be quite high. An RV loan might be a possibility, but again the valuation becomes a problem. Not saying it isn't worth $65,000, but convincing a bank it is worth that will be the challenge.

2.) Insurance. Yeah, good luck with that. Probably looking at a commercial type policy, even if not used in a commercial way. Allstate, Farmers, State Farm are probably not going to insure it. When I asked for a quote on Ram 5500 (roughly the same value), it was close to $2,000 a year. And that was through a commercial broker, Allstate said no. I just tried a quick quote on Hagerty as a military vehicle, and they said my conditions didn't qualify (not stored in a garage, driven off-road, etc.)

Good points! Also, would you need a CDL to drive this?

    No.

And anyone who needs to have this probably won't have a problem paying cash.

No, I don't think so. The CL ad even says it can be driven with a standard license. If not operated "commercially", and by that they mean hauling stuff for hire (having it branded as a rolling advertisement doesn't make it a "commercial vehicle" for CDL purposes) and being under 26,001 lbs GVWR, no CDL is required. I think the M1078 has a 22,700 lb GVW, so just under the limit.

    Hey Bert,
I think it would be an excellent Uber vehicle. You could almost set up a Uber bus stop, and just load 15-20 passengers and drive them from A to B. You can prettty much park this truck wherever you want. Commuting is a blast, and when someone cuts you off you can blind them with the 100,000 lumens of Vision X lighting!

    30 smiles per gallon.

Like the ol' skool FedEx commercials:
"when you absolutely, positively have to have it there overnight..."

except I would alter that to (as an Uber vehicle):
"when you absolutely, positively have to be at the airport regardless of traffic..."

    SOLD!

@scollins Who needs insurance? I'll be leaving tire scrub marks on every vehicle in Seattle. That sounds like a them problem, not a me problem.

As I recall, the metro busses have been getting away with it for years. Even was a story on King5 a few times.

Figured I'd toss this out there. Have 4 of these raceline 17x9 wheels I'd be willing to trade or sell. I'm in seattle. Like the looks of them, but think the 5 backspacing is a bit much for me!
