I have ActionTrax, they haven't been out very long so not much head to head testing yet but I think have a chance to unseat MaxTrax. Only a two year warranty and only $50 cheaper but MaxTrax but they seemed like the better purchase to me because MaxTrax has a long list of things you aren't supposed to do that void the warranty(bridging is a big one). ActionTrax are designed to work for bridging too, the only way to void the warranty is to spin your tires on them, and if you do burn off studs from spinning tyres they sell metal replacement studs so you can simply drill through the worn out studs and bolt in the metal ones.

I had been eyeballing that one before, figured a head gasket couldn't be too damn hard to do on it. The wife really wants a 4Runner but I don't think 120k miles and lockers were things she is really keen on, she's more looking for the dog mom mall crawler.

If I'm not mistaken, ActionTrax are a direct ripoff of the Maxtrax design. ActionTrax was started by two ex-Maxtrax employs. I'm not saying this to discredit them or their quality, but I'm fairly certain the two products are the same (design/quality), minus the ActionTrax have a serrated front and rear edge.

Just a heads up on the metal studs... Remember that if you spin your tires on the metal studs, no longer are you melting off the studs, but your tires will be absolutely FUBAR'ed.

Here's some more info, from any potential buyers...

The original founder/owner of MaxTrax, according to the owner of ActionTrax’s LinkedIn, so I’d call it an iteration more than a rip-off. Makes me assume(as an engineer) that he brought some business types in to help him run the business side of things when the company grew who then dragged their feet on continuing to improve the product if it was the best and selling as well as if could already because it’d be less profitable, and one day he realized he liked designing traction boards more than making profits and left.

They do have improved plastics so they can bend literally around a tire without breaking to allow for bridging. The bridge thing is big plus for me, I was buying them in the first place cuz I go alone a lot and wanted better self recovery options, but I’ve knock on wood never actually managed to get my Tacoma stuck. My default on the trail if the going gets tough at all is just low range with ATRAC active, even if I’m in third gear at 20mph. ATRAC can be over aggressive and kill your momentum on a slippery hill climb, but the locker’s there for that and the aggressive ABS action makes it really hard to dig yourself in. I do run into departure and breakover issues though, so I figured I’d actually get some use out of them if I could use them to angle up to an obstacle sometimes.

Ya, I just thought the studs were a good option to have compared with having to buy new tracks if I(or someone I help out on the beach or something) burn them up. Hopefully never need to and if I do they’ll have been on the market longer so other people tear their tires up first if it’s a real concern.

I just ordered some new tires to go up to 285s, so my current set of five 265/70/17 Duratracs will be for sale by the end of next week. They have about 24k miles on them and have been rotated every 5k miles. I'm having a hard time coming up with a value for them though. New they are about $230 each before tax, so that's over $1150. I think they have a lot of life left in them. Is asking $700 too much?

You can ask whatever you want, but I doubt you'll get much action at that price. Shops charge a lot to put tires on when you bring them in. Some won't mount used tires. I got a really good deal on some E class Cooper AT3's, delivered to my door for right at $500. They were at 90% when I sold them, and I included a usable spare. It took me like two weeks to sell all 5 for $200.

Yeah 700 is way too much. My 285 nitto ridge graps have almost the same amount of miles as you and I'd be hard pressed to get more than 500 for them.

Because you're a religious brand fanboy/girl? Because you can't operate the handle on the hilift? Because you like the color? Because you automatically assume most $$$ = best?

Get some of the airbag lifts instead. Cheaper, can be used in sand, uses your exhaust to lift your truck.

ARB baffles me. Like most of their products tend to be on towards the higher end but actually seriously good value for your money. Like the Summit, I’m not huge on the look but I’m not huge on how any full bull-bar looks on our trucks, I just think 3rd gens look a little nose heavy from the side and too busy from the front and a bull bar makes both those things worse. But it’s priced comparably to other full bull bars even though a fuckload more engineering went in. No one else is designing winch bumpers to interact properly with factory safety systems and then crash testing them. Their skids seem like a solid deal too. The sliders are pricey but by far the most factory looking design. Then you get to our rear bumper and ehh. Seems like a lot for what doesn’t seem to be anything special, but not that out of line with anything else you can get.

And then they’re like, let’s reinvent the hi-lift jack and charge $800 for it! What does it do? Everything the hi lift does, oh except you can’t use it as a come-a-long so it’s really just a jack. I mean, even if you give them the benefit of the doubt and say it’s objectively priced accordingly to the work that went into designing it and the quality of the product, who the fuck do they think needed that? Unless they’re just shamelessly going after the Overlander with more money than sense who buys the nicest, most expensive piece of gear no matter what.

I just got some new snow tires mounted up and planning on selling my Duratracs too. I’ve delayed listing because they have less than 10k on them and are almost worth more to keep rather than give them away at used prices. I’m not changing sizes just going to something more street friendly so I’m a little more flexible.

You can always ask high and see what happens. If you’re patient you never know. WA has crazy sales tax for guys buying new, so keep that in mind when you’re throwing your sales pitch.
