Hey fellow Taco owners. Been many years since I've made a post. Got my 05 Tacoma in March of 2005 direct from the factory. Rolled it off the delivery carrier and into my ownership on the same day.

Fast forward to 2023 and I'm still the origional owner with 290,000 miles on my truck.

I'm curious as to how many origional owners there are of 2nd gen trucks and how many miles everyone has. If you've traded in your 2nd Gen did you get another Tacoma? Personally I'm looking in a few years to get another vehicle but keeping my 2nd Gen for some serious mods. Not sure if I want another Tacoma or join the 4Runner crowd.

I’m with you on keeping my ‘08 with 123K ( second owner). I’m thinking of joining the T4R crowd myself. I just did tensioner pulleys , belt , alternator, plugs , coils, valve cover gaskets, and exhaust. She runs like new so why get rid of it. Wheel bearings as well

Still have my 2009 DCSB SR5. Purchased new in Sept 2008, one of the first of the 2009 model year. 330k miles and heavily modded, but still original drivetrain, and no major issues.

2006 DCLB Sport : 280K No major mechanical issues. Normal maintenance stuff. Valve cover seepage started around 200K. Transfer case just started leaking a drip here and there about 5K ago. Replaced original altenator at about 200K. Idler pulleys a few times (about 4 times) because I an dumb and drive across rivers and washes.

I run trails, light/medium offroading when I'm hunting, daily driver.

Yeah, I still have mine 2006 (delivered Sept 05), 144,000 miles. No rust to mention but the head gaskets blew this past summer at 138,000 when I was nearly 1,200 miles from home thus stranding me and the truck and costing me a fortune. But now I have to drive it another 18 years to get my value from it, recent photo:

Yes, it has off road and over land. Do I trust the head gaskets not to blow again, dunno. I have towed our boat regularly as well. Aside from the blown head gasket the rear springs were replaced twice and collapsed again so I had a custom pack made and lifted the front as well with Bilstein 5100s. The driveshaft had an issue and was taken care of by a SB. I assume the transmission is next.

I think the Tacoma has singularly the most horrid cruise control in automotive existence. It will drop two gears and rev to the red line nearly every time engaged, no wonder the head gaskets failed!

I realize that most of us are "motor heads" but most folks cannot tell an 05 from a 2023. They look so much alike and especially the cab section being essentially the same and only the front and rear facia being enough different that my wife can sort of know the difference and she is my stand in for the every man. People still ask me if I got a new truck, yeah, 18 years ago. Well, I guess with a "new" low mileage engine, supposedly outside the problem serial numbers (never acknowledged by Toyota but they know) maybe it is a sort of new truck. Twice a year, spring and fall, I go under the truck and search out every speck of rust. I even lifted the bed off to refinish the rear rails. Frankly, my equally aged Rubicon TJ Jeep is more reliable, at least the engine has not exploded even if it leaks oil like an AMF Harley. The leaking oil rust proofs the frame. Maybe Toyota could learn more than a few lessons from Jeep.

Nail on the head! I am still amazed that Toyota's engineers couldn't design a cruise control. All others I have experienced worked very well, but the Tacoma's was just plain lousy.

Years ago when "Unintended Acceleration" was a thing, there was a TSB which involved, among other things, a computer reflash. I had that done, and for reasons unknown to the dealer's service department, the cruise control immediately started working much better!

Looks like mine, only mines an access cab with 105K. Any warning signs before head gasket blew, or just kaboom?
