Our Tacoma is vibrating really bad when we drive 25mph to 35 mph, anyone else have this issue? It stops when we shift into 4th, my son says it's the torque converter. Agree?

We took it into a transmission shop and they said they pulled pan and fluid was very dark and excessive amount of metal on magnet. They suggested a whole new transmission. My son said if it was the transmission, why does the vibrating stop when shift into 4th? He is sure it's the torque converter. Anyone have this issue in the past and did that fix it?

Welcome to Tacoma World. I can't diagnose your problem, but maybe someone else can help. Is your truck lifted?

It could be a whole bunch of things. How many miles on the truck? Have you checked U joints or carrier bearing?

Flush the tranny out first before scrapping the whole thing

He only replaced one as far as I know. I'll pass this information onto him. It's worth a shot. We don't have $3900 for new transmission.

Ya that is crazy money. I had two autos in my life and both were NIGHTMARES. I'm strictly a M/T guy now and never looked back. Try taking it somewhere else.

Hard to say for sure without being there, but are you 4wd? If so and new u joints or a carrier bearing doesn't fix it, try switching into 4 hi while in 5th gear to see if it goes away. If it does, could be your drivers side needle bearing and or cv axle. It's a known problem with a solution, just search. Also might check your trans fluid level, it's a special procedure due to being sealed. These transmissions leave the factory low on fluid, also a known defect. Good luck and keep us posted on what the culprit/ fix was. BTW the carrier bearing has a lot of flex and movement while under load, it will bounce around Like crazy putting a lot of pressure on the u joints causing them to prematurely fail. I filled the rubber boot, whatever, with 100% silicon to stiffen it up and used 3/4 inch spacers to drop it so the drive shafts were not at such sever angles. You can use washers as spacers or a block of steel or aluminum. I think someone on here may even sale them. Also check out the YouTube video showing what happens to the drive shaft, rear end, u joints and center bearing under acceleration. Tons of wrap and movement. Can't remember the name of it but if you put enough relevant words together it should pop up.

i took a video of under my truck a while ago and posted on youtube. It was my carrier bearing. It ended up blowing apart my ujoint as well before i could fix it. I'm in a DCLB 4x4

There are a possibility of two different transmissions in your truck . On the left side of the page under your name is where you can identify your engine size and type of transmission .Look at my user name and how it lists what type of truck I have . You can do the same thing

    One is the 5 speed
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...th-pics-for-second-gen-4-liter-trucks.289913/

And one is the 4 speed
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...sions-write-up-your-4-speed-automatic.325531/

Considering a transmission shop test drove the truck , then pulled the transmission pan and found metal , I can almost guarantee a transmission problem . Hopefully the links will help in the diagnosis .
I doubt the torque converter is the problem . 4th gear is usually when the torque converter cycles between on and off .

yeah it is far cheaper to check and verify driveshaft angles than dig into transmission ^^^^

need an accurate level surface and accurate protractor, and follow the T-SB-0008-14 steps
on how the measure the angles
....[but fixing it on 2007 will be your own shims]

lifted = more than just lifting, you need to shim leafs and/or carrier bearing to accomodate the new angles of the propellors

google driveshaft vibrations and driveshaft angles and you will find a few sites
describing how lifting a truck and introduce bad vibes at certain speeds, and recommendations for correcting it

I can't daig your issue over the internet, there are several things that could cause that.

My question is why would you take the truck to a shop that you do not trust their diagnosis?
