I discovered the drive shaft is off by a tooth or two. Question is, when I go to reinstall do I line it up with the rear dif mark or the transfer case mark? I had marked them each before I noticed the issue. Then I thought I was seeing things (happens sometimes). So I tied a string from zerk to zerk & sure enough they were off.

I'm sure someone will correct me if needed, but I'd imagine you can correct that one spline off by removing either end, lining it up and then reattaching to whichever flange you disconnected it from. Whichever seems easier for you, I guess

The phase of a drive shaft is not relevant to the transfer or differential flanges. I am not sure about your "marks". What do they represent? Do you have pictures?
I have included a picture and YouTube link which will hopefully help.

    What Mr Hobbs said.
From your other thread, you changed the support brg. When that flange came off it went back on 1 spline off. I'll bet @cruiserguy 's life ;) it's just one spline.
Countless folks think the drive shaft end flanges have to mate to the diff and xfercase flanges exactly the way they came off. It's just not so. It's not a bad idea for other reasons and a common practice but not a requirement for any phasing relationship.

Pull the flange at the support brg and put it back inline.
There is a good chance you will not feel a difference.

Ok. Good to know. I am actually doing u joints. That is where this all started.

    Learning newness everyday....

& my understanding is that the u joints in the double cardan cannot, or should be be attempted to, be changed, correct?

    Thank you all....

have you looked into just getting a whole new driveshaft assembly? eliminate any headaches

this is for my truck somewhere in this link but probably similar prices for a 2oo1 AT

i am near my wits end with my gremlin vibration issues and what is causing them
the 'professional' mechanics in my area don't have any idea and are total clueless or just full of BS and don't wish to help my taco out

I may have to, but first I need to get the thing to let go of my truck! I can’t get the rear propeller to give it up!

@ GQ7227 - not sure if you're still struggling with the vibration stuff, nor if any of this'll help.... I did adjust the driveshaft by a spline or two. Didn't need any u joints, however I did decide to change out the center support bearing. So finished that up, hit the road &.... Still vibing, not quite as much, but too much to let it go.... Whelp, I had noticed my front passenger tire was slightly choppy, so I decided to rotate. Had to change the oil anyway since the pan bolt seal was leaking. Anywho, when i rotated I just did an X & wouldn't ya know, I barely, I mean barely detect any vibe at all. In fact this could just be because of the rotate & the tires need to do their thing. I also did something I have never thought of trying. I had all fours off the ground. & as I was doing the first round of tightening I said to myself, "Self, why do we do the final tightening with them on the ground? I mean wouldn't it be more ideal while suspended?" I did not look this up, nor did I ask anyone, but I proceeded to torque them all to spec while suspended.
Ah, but alas the fun that is tacoma never ends though cuz now I am chasing down what I believe to be a body mount clunking. I tweaked today & the tacoma tilt is better, but still with clunk, so off to search the forum. & hopefully this tweaking won't put me back in vibe land. If so, I'll let you know....

Kristi with a K- i just had the tires rotated and re-balanced at DT for the 2nd time since I got new ones in late December! I have not needed to use the A/C lately (that is where the biggest (loudest) gremlin rattle comes from after turning it off) but there is still a small rattle which cannot be heard unless the radio volume is low and windows are closed blocking outside traffic noise. I don't know :frusty: I have not felt the vibration under my feet lately because I have not driven it like a madman for awhile (super high engine speed)
I drive an MT ... maybe that is the problem?

I wasn't necessarily sayin' that the tire rotation would do it, just that in trying this & that, you never know.
Ok. So I think I may have misunderstood your vibe issues. Let's see.... The AC one - is that when you are idling in drive or reverse, or rather, in gear?

it happens at about 2.1k RPMs and then goes away until I shift gears and comes back in the other gears at the same RPMs
the A/C operation seems to make it louder for some reason (but only after the A/C has been on awhile and then off)
    its very strange!
I looked at a few of the heat shields underneath today and did not see anything loose to any noticeable degree
