Bought in CT live in NY. I transfered plates from old vehicle to new vehicle. Dealer sat on transferring registration for 2 weeks. Had a temporary plate. Long story short after several phone calls finally got the registration the day before the temp plate expired. Now just need. NYS inspection. Its been a bit of a pain in the ass.

The state still makes you pay their fee for the sticker, a few dollars as I recall. Ask your mechanic about the new car exemption. I took mine to Dover Garage on North Main street for inspection. Where I like to go. Tom was as always very fair.

Edit. I also forgot to mention but maybe you figured it out. You can't get your Pa inspection stickers until you have the Pennsylvania plates. They can't do all the record keeping required on an out of state temp tag. They will just tell you to come back with it.

As others have said, it's dependent on the state and the efficiency of the dealer. Some states use both a DMV / BMV for registration and a title office / clerk of courts for titling; in those cases best you can expect is that the dealer handles the title process and not the reg. Some states also require an inspection on out of state vehicles (checking VIN) which you have to do in person.

When I lived in Calif, I bought 2 cars in Oregon. Dealer does not register them, but they collect Calif sales tax and send that to the DMV. You go in to the DMV with paperwork and smog, get out of state inspection, and register the vehicle.

When I lived in Calif, but was moving to Ohio, I bought a Taco in Oregon. Dealer used my Ohio address, collected Ohio sales tax, and did the title for me. The Ohio title clerk called me 2 weeks later and told me to come get the title. I then went to BMV and got an out of state inspection and then registered it.

Yep! Just did this back in February/March. I was leery just as you are. They told me to pay everything to the dealer which they calculate based on your state. They told me plates would be in the mail. Now I know that wouldn't happen just because my state requires a inspection for any vehicles bought out of state. So they called me and told me come on down, I did not have to pay any extra, they actually refunded me like $50 or something like that. But you should be fine, you will either receive in the mail or your DMV will call you and tell you it is ready.

I bought my 2020 Pro from a Kansas dealership and had it delivered to me in Oklahoma. They did register it from out of state, but they got the wrong county. Plates were mailed to my address (same as delivery address).

I don't understand what the big problem is buying out of state. Seemed pretty seamless when i did it.

Another PA guy here that bought a truck in Maryland. Been doing it for years, same Toyota dealer actually. They always sent the sales tax, etc to a notary service in PA and I got my tags or registration in the mail. The only snag I've had was related to the "current events". It took way longer than it should to get registration for my '21 and I was just transferring tags from my '09. Had to get an additional temporary tag. Luckily that one didn't run out. PennDot must be backlogged or something. Took almost 4 months to get the title for another vehicle I own...

Also bought my previous GTI in Virginia. Same thing, they sent the taxes and paperwork to a notary and I was able to get plates easily.

I bought my taco in the same state but from a dealer 3 hours away. They mailed out the plates to me when the DMV sent them to the dealer.

Yeah some dealers sell to you claiming that they have reciprocity with other states for tax purposes. Do not trust them and do your homework. Not all states will accept forms from other states when taxes are collected. You must make sure they are reciprocal, otherwise you will pay sales tax in one state and get your truck back and hand the local DMV a form and they will laugh at you. Then you will pay taxes in that state or highway use tax, whatever they charge. Happened to my buddy and it was a mess. Not all dealers are crooks, but trust and VERIFY.
