    Hey all,

I just picked up my first new truck... ever. It's a 2017 TRD OR and I'm friggin in love. I feel like Marty McFly heading up to the lake in Back To The Future (okay, I'm a dork). I've been driving around a 1987 Toyota 4x4 for the past five years - but it's a regular cab and my new wife and I are pregnant (well, she is), so I finally had to grow up and get a new truck with a backseat (baby seat).

I'm crazy sad to put my old yota up for sale as it only has original 65k miles on it - and I've babied it - but, life is life (first world problems).

A few reasons why I'm writing: I labored over getting either the SR5 4x4 or the TRD OR 4x2. They were both about exactly the same price (33k and change). I thought I was gonna go 4x4 because I've always had 4x4 trucks... and it seems handy to have one. Then I drove both models and fell in love with the way the OR handles... and looks. Also the OR came with the larger screen, navi and more options etc.

And the more I thought about it - I just don't use 4x4 that much. In 5 years with my old truck I probably used it 3 or 4 times and just for fun. Not out of necessity. I live in LA and, sure, I go to Yosemite, Joshua Tree, Big Sur etc a lot but I never get stuck... or drive around in mud. Also, we got my wife the Volvo XC70 which is AWD in case we ever get surprise snow in LA or something (right).

So might as well go with the one that has more options and is more fun to drive on the road, right? I feel like I'm going to get slammed here for not getting 4x4 haha. Anyway, the wife put a cap on how much we're spending on this truck with our first kid on the way so I didn't wanna push the issue (gotta love the wife more than the truck I suppose).

Anyhow, I hope I made the right decision there. The other thing is that I went black. It just looks friggin cool as all hell. And reminds me of the BTTF truck. But I've only had it two days, never washed it, and I saw it in the sun this morning... already a few swirls (assuming from the dealer) and a slight bit of a fog or haze over the paint when you're looking closely at it.

I park it outside on the street for now... but hopefully we'll get into a place with a garage soon. So how do you street parkers with black tacos keep them clean? Or is it a truck so who gives a crap? I'm just one of those guys that likes to take care of his stuff. Thanks for any tips.

The ride on this thing is just amazing... rides like a truck should. Feels VERY different than the SR5 to me.

Anyway, if anyone is looking we went to Longo and they had over 80 Tacomas in (most of them 2017) in every style and were giving $750 off MSRP. Here are some pics of my first new Taco - baby seat ready - and one of the '87 reg cab that's heading out the door (argh):[IMG]

Damn, that 87 is so clean. Probably worth a pretty penny if it's rust free and 22re

I think you made the smart choice getting 4x2 in LA. Better to have the creature comforts that you actually use than 4x4 you'll never need

Congrats on your new truck! Sounds like you made the right choice for your driving style / area. Does the 4x2 TRD OR still have a locking rear?

Hah, come on guys... don't make me regret upgrading (downgrading?) the '87! I don't know the forum rules or anything so I don't want to turn this thread into an ad - but the '87 (and its story) is currently on eBay if anyone wants to search for it. I had no idea how else to sell it - but I'm guessing now this forum would've been a good venue ;)

Edit: And it's a 22R btw. Which I love. Makes it feel vintage.

Holy hell, are you guys serious?? Since when did these things go up in value so much? I thought I was a little crazy with my reserve price but always get random offers on the street and such.

Thanks for the link Tashcomer :)
