I was told by a friend that recirculate is only about 80% and 20% fresh air. So when a person tries to commit suicide, they only become a vegetable. And not completely dead.

To get back on track, even on recirculate you will always have some outside air entering the car through the vents. The cars that I had that were built in the 50's had the ability to stop all outside air from entering the car. I don't remember the years but at sometime in the distant past there was a government requirement that all cars have some outside air entering the car at all times. A few years later the requirement was extended to trucks.
In other words when you select recirculate most but not all of the air entering the cabin is recirculated. So there is no way to prevent all of the outside smells from entering the cabin area.

I've found that EVERY vehicle I've driven (or ridden in) has allowed the awful smell of SKUNK in while passing by one on a highway. Didn't matter if A/C was on, re-circulation was on, windows open/closed, etc. If the outside air is really stinky it will find it's way in unless you are in an hermetically sealed container.

Sorry for bumping this post up but did OP find the cause?

I have the same problem. I get that air should still come in with the recirculation on, but it's a lot more than most vehicles. On the freeway, my cabin will fill up with a big rig's exhaust and that big rig is about 200 yards in front spewing out the white smoke. On the streets, if I'm somewhat behind a smoking old car, I have to find a way to change lanes and get far from the car

No. I already said it, but he and OP shouldn't be getting that much in. My recirculating setting blocks out most if not all odors when used.

thanks. i figured it wasn't normal. i never had this problem with other cars. i did have the blower changed a couple times for that faulty issue. this didn't really bother me until now that I'm commuting on a heavy big rig freeway
