I just spent 15 minutes searching for a clear answer to no avail, so I thought I'd just ask: Does the OV tune (for MT) address the almost complete lack of engine braking from the stock tune?

Do the @MOC221_ test. In a safe spot as you're coasting in DFCO, turn off the key. There's no additional engine braking.

It can be adjusted slightly in the tune.

The real test for me was the times that I was following some othe MT cars that I knew had good engine braking. They were down shifting for the same stops that I was and were slowing about as fast as I was.

I believe that it is just a false perception from our height that we are not slowing fast enough?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the quick answer. I'll have to give try cycling the ignition while braking and see what happens. My roommate has commented as a passenger on the truck's lack of engine braking just by listening to the elevated RPM's that don't really fall like you'd expect from a "normal" vehicle. I might ought to do a test from 50-30mph in 3rd gear vs neutral and see how many seconds it takes. Maybe I could compare my results with someone who has the tune installed..

    You're welcome!

Neutral versus in gear is going to be different as there are different throttle maps for each gear and neutral in the Stock tune.

There are a lot of factors that affect the revs dropping including the weight of the flywheel.

On the stock tune and Magnuson’s tune there is readily apparent engine braking when you downshift. It isn’t as aggressive as some vehicles I’ve driven but it is definitely there and works. I frequently only brake to a stop in the last bit of second gear and just downshift/engine brake for the rest of the needed deceleration.

The fact that there's different maps for each gear is extremely frustrating IMO. I've always felt that the throttle had a different response depending on what gear I was in, glad to know I'm not just going crazy.
It could still be a useful test to see just how much engine braking actually helps. If I decelerated from 50-30mph in 10 seconds in neutral, but 9.5s in gear, then I can say definitively that there's no significant engine braking.

The vF 2.0 Tunes use a Single Torque Map Patch that uses the same map for all gears.

Just for everyone's SA, I was doing that engine braking/key off thing in 4lo 1st gear to get a handle on what the truck was doing in relation to the DFCO on/off cycle.. far away from traffic lol!
I still detest what the truck does at about 1300 rpm in that scenario (decelerating in 4lo 1st gear, full lift) while going down a steepish hill. Whoa whoa there Nelly, where ya goin?

If any of you PRO TUNERS could bend Mat's ear on this again, I'd be much obliged!

I meant to ask about his a while back and for some reason just thought of it again. Can you explain or point me to another thread that explains Toyota's "logic" behind this?..specifically for the MT. It seems that this totally destroys the experience of driving a MT.

I have no idea about Toyota's logic and agree that it is a pretty dumb idea. That said, I could see where maybe the OD gears could have a different throttle map for MPGs, but back in the day when vF Tuner gave us the Single Torque Map Patch file to test, the difference was quite amazing. I was fooled into thinking that it was an entire tune, when only it was just that Patch on the Stock tune.

It is pretty amazing how Toyota has screwed a lot of us with the crappy Stock tune.
