Talk to any service writer/manager at any toyota dealer. They will tell you the same thing.

Since everyone bases data of forums posts lol....

You barely see any motor blow up threads in the 2nd gen forum. PLENTY of high mileage trucks on that forum.

Your telling me people don't assume that the 3rd gens are reliable based on the solid history of the Tacoma? C'mon man.

You have completely missed the point of the thread and my post. 1.3 million third gen Tacomas have sold so far with 2020 selling better than any other model year in the vehicles existence. The internet is now more widely used than it has ever been during the 1st and 2nd gen lifecycles. It’s not surprising seeing small numbers of engine failures relative to how many trucks have sold pop up and an enthusiasts forum. 2nd and first gens had their own problems. Early year 2nd gens have head gasket problems and all model years are affected by the frame problems but the first gens are notoriously bad. Don’t pretend other models haven’t had issues or are supremely more reliable. This has been a common sentiment among 2nd and 1st gen owners since before the third gen was even released. It’s been 7 years. Millions of units are on the road with many owners like myself approaching the 200k mile mark. Not to mention the 2gr has been used in more models than the 1gr and has racked up more miles across all models. Highlanders frequently have seen 350-400k miles on their original engines. My dad had 370,000 on his before it died.

Depends where you are when it comes to lightning. I've been zap 3 times. One time it nearly made me cash in my chips. Lightning sucks.

Because when the 2nd gens were new there was nobody posting on this forum to report engine failures in the first 100k. Those that are still around are obviously part of the vast majority of 2nd gens that did not have a defect. In 10 years, there will be nothing but high mileage 3rd gens in this forum, because the minute minority of trucks with defects will have already failed.

My brother had a 2001 highlander with the notorious 3.0 sludge engine that failed at 70k miles. Dealer still offered him $8k toward a new 2010 rav4.

I believe that’s the 1mzFEv6 in the first gen highlander. The second gen they gave it a 2gr option which are notoriously reliable.

Well we both bought vehicles at the same time when i bought my 4.7 tundra thinking they were bulletproof. At least one of us were right.

That 4.7 is one hell of an engine. Wish they threw it in the 2nd gen taco like they did the 4Runner. I would take that any day over my 2gr.

Grasping at straws. Head gaskets issues do happen... at 200k lol. Its still cheaper than a 3.5 timing cover reseal that seem to be a frequent issue.

The 2gr in the Tacoma is SIMILAR to the GR in other platforms. Its not exactly the same engine.

We can go back and forth on this allll day but again none of us know the true data.

There are plenty of examples of them failing under 200k heck some under 150k on this forum alone buddy. Same with timing covers on the second gen. If none of us know the data then you can’t speculate the superior reliability of previous gens, you are contradicting yourself. From 2016 onward the 2gr-fks has been used in the highlander, Avalon, camry, sienna, rx350, ls350 and more.

Talk to a service manager in 2012 and they'd probably say the same thing about the gen 2 vs gen 1 as they'd say today about gen 3 vs gen 2. Everyone looks back on older stuff with rose colored glasses and forgets about the issues they had. I'm sure when the 4th gen comes out you'll have clowns from here doing this same thing in the 4th gen forum.

You could also argue the 2nd gens with early issues are already weeded out. Same as if you came back here in 10 years. Seems like the valve issue either happens around 40-60k miles or not at all.

I'm not brushing the issue off or putting it on the owner. It sucks, it's happening a little more than I'd like to see (still seems small % overall) but thankfully most have been under warranty. None of us know how many are truly impacted. But I do know its a shitty thing to come into someone's thread that is having major engine issues (which I think headgaskets are also major issues) and posting non-sense saying "another one" or whatever makes you feel better about the mighty 4.0.

Cool story bro. They're all blown head gaskets at under 100k
