i know this is an older thread but i just wanted to mention that i baby mine around most of the time, pretty evenly split highway/streets, i'm all stock- motor, wheels, tires etc, and i get around 20 mpg which gives me a little over 300 miles per tank (i think usually around 320-340) and i've got 4.0L Automatic Prerunner.

i heard the new model trucks have dual vvt-i and are supposed to get 25mpgs... i'd love to see what i could get with one of those... retrofit? :D

I've been averaging about 23.5mpg for the last few tanks, hitting over the 400 mile mark before the light comes on. 2.7l 4x4 manual access cab. Just gotta know when to lay off the pedal. :)

you guys have inspiered me. gots me a road trip to phoenix this week and ill see what stayin below 70mph/2000rpm will offer me with 2 tallish bikes stuck upright, 110lbs of dogs and 2 gear bags in a month old 2010 4.0L 2wd dc lb thats bone stock. if i can exceed 21mpg ill be a happy boy. best so far is low 20's in the same config on the same trip but i did rock through the desert at around 75-80 much of the time and the wind was not my pal. so many variable this equasion may be hard to pin down.

i think i read somewhere that most vehicles reach their peak efficiency around 60mph. i usually drive about 65 on the highway and i usually get around 21 (but mixed with street driving, and i have an access cab) not sure if 70mph plus all the gear will get the mpg high enough. i would be interested in knowing how much difference there is betweern 65 and 70 tho, maybe drive one speed on the way in, and different speed on the way back?

also on a side note I found an app for android that helps track data on vehicle usage and costs such as fill-ups, millage, maintenance... it's call aCar, http://www.zonewalker.com/acar but it's only for android. if you wanted to do it manually you could do the same stuff in Excel, but it's nice to carry with you on the phone and instantly see updated statistics.

Most of the studies I have seen that point to 60 mph being the most effecient speed for mpg are generally older studies on older vehicles. The newer vehicles (designed and built since the mph increase to 70) tend to average better at or barely under 70 mph.

I have gotten 22.5mpg, had I continued with those driving habits, I should have been able to get about 470 miles out of one tank. It's in my fuelly blog, listed as 21.1mpg (tire size adjustment gets me to 22.5).

It can be done, but I have not done it yet.

Summit racing, jegs any place like that. Just be sure to take a rough measurement of the stock fan so you get the correct size. Too small will cause overheating, too big and it might not fit.
I've been thinkin of doin this myself

I know I could get 400 out of a tank. I guess I'll run this next one up and snap a picture. Check my fuelly stats in my signature...I couldn't be happier for a V6, 4x4, DC.

it worked out pretty well. i filled up at the shell store with 89 octain 2 days before and topped off at circle k with 89 oct just before i left. to stay at or under 2000rpm while using the factory cruise control, the stock speedo read 69mph but the garmin nuvi 1300 gps gave me a actual of 66mph. heres the tank stats read right on the line as accurately as possible:

    3/4 tank - 107.9 mi
    1/2 tank - 197.5 mi
    1/4 tank - 301.3 mi
    fuel light - 394.4 mi
    E reading - 406.1 mi
at fill up -- 418.2 mi

aprox 21 mpg (i lost my recipt/notes) and aprox 40 miles from my destination. this was achieved on a mostly flat 4 lane desert hwy drive with calm winds, 1 low/gentle mtn pass and aprox 12 accellerations only when nessesary to get up to speed after a stop, retain momentum and/or not get run over while passing.

on the way back i chose a different (not so damn boring) route that offered many large and often steep mtn passes through az mine country in breezy to windy conditions with a slightly head on crosswind on a 2 lane hwy. i did not record any quarterly tank data on this leg but was surprised to achieve 20.8 mpg with several hard accelerations. once i hit flat ground, i topped off and continued with little to no wind on the same 4 lane hwy i took a few days earlier at 69mph on the speedo, 67mph acctual with no more than 6 big taps of the throttle. back home, i topped off again and recorded 21.8 mpg.

so not only is 400 miles on a 21 gal tank doable but toyotas hwy mpg numbers are correct. the only trick is ya gotta drive like a friggin grandmother with a broken right foot to get them.

I dont think I've ever gotten more than 250 on a tank mixed city highway with my 2010 auto 4x4...On my supercharged 4x4 6 speed I averaged like 170 per tank mixed...You boys must be drivin like grandma on her way to church on sunday to be getting those numbers :D

I also have a 2010 auto. 4WD DC... What needs to known is "what is a tank" to YOU?

Is it when the E light comes on (17 gallons), or when the needle is over the E line (18.5 gallons),... but surely it isn' an actual empty tank (21 gallons)?

You might enjoy using www.Fuelly.com and have the average mileage posted, as some of us do on TW?

I am getting 16.7 MPG now-a-days combined city/ highway... and my E-Light comes on just over 280 miles from the fill up. If I top off at the E-Line, then my truck gets me to just over 300 miles. If I ran the truck until empty (a tank) then I could drive 350 miles (at my average mileage).

Are you kidding me, 170 miles on a 6speed 4x4! If that is true I would reconsider the super charger as my future mod. I think if you were really getting 170 miles on a super charged tacoma some thing is off with your fuel mapping or ecu.

I loved listening to the SC whine :D I have yet to get it installed in the 2010 since the morons at Toyota cant seem to figure out how to integrate the brake override into the SC reflash...Seriously though, I drive fairly agressively, but not floored all the time. The only car I've had that was thirstier was my 04 S4 with a V8; It got all of 8 MPG around town, but crusing on the highway to florida and back , I'd consistantly be over 425 on a tank...Guess thats the price you pay for 340 HP...Oh and a tank to me is about an 1/8" or so below the E line on the taco...

;) yup, gotta compare apple to apple, 4x4 V6 4.0 Automatic is definitely a gas hog, haha ... I read a post before that 4 cyl manual 2x4 can get as high as 30-34 miles a gal. but I love my truck.

my best mileage was 23, average about 22, half tank or full tank, miles per gallon each time I fill up. I do use fuelly.com so I can keep an eye of how I drive, at least have a record of them. Mostly use my truck to go to work, use back road instead of Interstate so I can run a little slower without aggravating the lead footers
