Hey guys. New member. Viewed the page a lot though for tips back when I had a first gen. Anyways, I have a 3rd gen (2020) and I was wondering if anyone had issues with the engine temp rising while at idle randomly? It’s genuinely random. No rhyme to when it happens. Soon as I get to moving it will cool back down and sometimes if I stop again it won’t rise back up. The fan runs as it should. I have no water leaks. It’s never ran hot before. Anyone else run into this?

AC Temp? Trans Temp? Engine Temp?

If you're talking about AC temp, our trucks don't have a fan on the radiator/condenser for AC... So AC will get warmer on idle, or even not work entirely.

My apologies I’m referring to engine temp. However I have noticed that issue with the ac as well so I’m glad to know that’s not going out on me

Would a thermostat issue come up on a computer? I’ve taken it in to the dealer ship twice and both times they hooked the computer up but found nothing. Or so they claim. Anyways. Also yes I am referring more to engine temp. My apologies.

How many miles? Partially clogged radiator? If you raise the RPMs a bit, can you hear the fan howling (fan clutch locked up as it should be)? Half the surface of the radiator packed with leaves and crap between the radiator and condensor? Losing any coolant? Using the correct pink Long Life (or SLL) coolant?

I will just be sitting somewhere be it a red light Walmart pick up whatever. Sittin, not movin and my temp gauge slowly increases. It’s gotten to red one time when I wasn’t paying attention even. It only happens randomly though which is what confuses me.

It’s got right at 40k. The engine bay is clean. Radiator is not clogged in any way. The fan works as it should when it should. I keep the maintenance up on it.

Or a bubble in the cooling system. Fluid isn't moving correctly at idle.

Turn the truck off if you see the temp rising and you are stuck at a light and then back on when traffic moves again if possible...don't burn it down.

I have a scan gauge 2. It shows engine temp, occasionally aftwr driving a while, and stopping for gas, i turn it on and its gone to 200. Which still isnt too high. Normal running temps are like 190 to 195 from what i see. Air not moving over it is what i chalked that temp to, running, stopping for a minute, then back on the move. No codes.

Take a picture of the engine temp gauge and take that to the dealer. Scan gauge tool (or similar) is a good idea (with pic) to try and confirm what the gauge is showing.

Still under warranty, I'd take it in. That almost sounds like a water pump impeller that's not "impelling". Haven't seen it on Toyotas, but have seen a few others where the impeller would spin on the shaft. Sitting at a light under no load shouldn't create much heat at all and the fact that it's going from normal to the red in that short period of time is a problem. If you hear the fan howling away then I would guess water pump or maybe T-stat...I'd have a hard time seeing a radiator clogged up in that few miles. If you put the temp guage in the red, I'd most certainly want the problem at least documented for warranty...open deck aluminum blocks don't like to get hot.

I agree. Sounds like a bubble.

OP you have the coolant flushed or open up the system at all?

    Curious too?
Other than cold start, I can barely hear mine run, even in extreme heat, but then again, I haven’t towed heavy in extreme heat w other adders like hills, stop n go, etc

The way the OP described it, it kinda sounds like he has an E-Fan instead of Stock. :notsure:

Same, that’s what peaked my curiosity.
I’m sure an actual cert tech could chime in, but back in until day, the only way I knew how to check a belt driven fan, was to test the thermo/clutch in hot water. I’m sure there’s better ways today, but other than HD trucks, I think belt driven fans are nearly nonexistent.
