Overdrive issue

Got a friend at work who just bought a 2000 model 4 Runner with the V6 engine.
He knew it was having a problem and got it for a good price as a result.

What it is doing is going dead when coming to a complete stop, but it only does it while in overdrive. You can put it in any other gear and drive normally and it does not shut off when stopped.

It shifts out fine. It doesn't shift hard or anything.

What are some possibilities for what's going on?

You mean the engine stalls/quits running when you stop with it in the normal position of OD?

When placed in park or neutral for restart, does it restart easily?

Does it actually shift into OD when driving (count the shifts) and you feel the converter lock up (see RPM drop) ?

What does the trans fluid look/smell like? (assuming that unit has a dipstick to check)

Is there any aftermarket alarm/immobilizer stuff on it?

Just asking random questions to help us try to get started.

To the first question, yes that is what is happening.

I will ask about the rest.

 

Also, when you start it...then put in D (overdrive) and just hold with the brake does it stall or run?
