That explanation seems to make the most sense. So in short, I just won’t be able to be a lazy bastard when at the pump lol.. I think I can manage that, was just caught off guard when it happened at two different pumps.

Had this exact same thing happen with my 2021 TRDOR. Three times it overfilled and ran down the side. I was thinking it was my truck, but then it happened to my wife's 4Runner. The only common denominator was all of these instances were at the same gas station. I went to a different station across town and filled up with no issues. That station now gets all of my gas business.

Just because of your reply I’m going to try a third gas station just to see.. honestly makes me feel a bit better to hear someone else with a 21’ had the same issue. Really didn’t want to have to bring it in for service before even owning it a full week..

I've lazy bastarded my way through probably 300 or more fill ups and never had this happen to my Taco. I vote there is an issue with your truck. Or that gas stations pumps.

I'd give the dealer a shout.

For kicks I will try a third station on my next fill and report back to you my findings. Nothing better than doing internet science with strangers.

There are two particular stations in my town that do weird stuff with my Tacoma, but none of my other cars.

on a near empty tank it will overflow after about 10 gallons are added. The pump will click off and then gas will spew out of the tank with a boiling/bubbling sound for 5 seconds.

I’ve filled up hundreds of times at other places with no issues. It’s almost like the gas at those two stations is carbonated lol.

I have no explanation. Solution is to avoid those stations for me.

Different Manufacturer truck had this problem only when the dispenser was hanging by itself, it needed a steep angle almost straight up and down to not overfill so you always had to hold it upright.

For a new truck it’s annoying for sure. My new truck has 3,405 miles on it, and I still need to bring it back in because the turn signal doesn’t shut off by itself on left turns!

Had this same issue with my 21 and there's a whole thread outlining the issues.

I ended up realizing what the problem was. Exact same thing Toyko Joe said. The gas pump hung by itself. The angle of the nozzle hit the top of the filler tube inside. That's when it overflowed.

If you get a good fitting nozzle it doesn't happen. I used one in WV that had a angled collar at the top that kept the nozzle perfectly aligned and had no issue filling at the fastest speed.

I have filled mine up probably 30 times since new and no issues with over spilling. Here in Canada we do not have a nozzle lock on the hose, we have to hold it down and fill manually till the handle clicks off and we have a choice of hanging it or continue to fill up more. So not sure about what is happening to yours.

This is exactly why NJ is full serve only. Leave this service to trained professionals only.

Full service here in Canada is something out of the past. Everything is self serve now. There might be the odd ma and pa garage that offers full serve but not too many.

OP; assuming you are filling the gas correctly (its not rocket science). You don’t say how much gas continues to flow after the pump clicks. You may have a issue worthy of a dealer trip. Overfilling the gas on a continuing basis can be very bad. The overfill “pours” liquid gas on your carbon canister. Replacing emissions is an expensive fix.

Happens once; an anomaly. Happens twice; probably a coincidence? Happens three time; starting to feel like a pattern!

Bottom line; if this issue is repeatable at different fueling locations then there is something going on.

So far, the common denominator is the OP and the truck.

2 different fuel stations.....same issue. Not likely the fuel station or the pump.

Suggest the OP to hold the fill nozzle during the fill without the autofill lock engaged.

I must have filled up a zillion times in the last 25 years. I cannot ever remembering the gas pump not clicking off when the trucks tank was near full. Just refrain yourself from pumping that last gallon or whatever in.
