Report those stations to the state department of agriculture who usually handles fuel pump problems (most people don't know that.) I believe federal law requires a sticker on every pump somewhere with contact info. The pump may be over pressured so the flow is too high, or the handle sensor may need replacing, etc.

Either your truck has a bend or block in the fill tube going to the tank (possible, may want dealer to take a look) or you have been unlucky by using the same station's faulty pumps. I always lower the pump handle and let the hose drain out on the ground before I put it in my vehicles (especially motorcycle) to get the dribbles out (cue eco-nuts spamming me...)

That being said, I bought a new Kia 15 years ago or so and on my first fill up I was unable to get *any* fuel in the tank. I had the station owner try and he couldn't either. The nozzle went all the way in but every time I pulled the trigger it would BLOW back out with force as if the fill tube was blocked. We were able to dribble a pint or so in after a while since I was empty. I took it to the dealer and they went "yep, we'll fix that." Turns out I got a warranty "sensor" replacement, and still can't understand why Kia would put a valve in the fill tube that closes it off completely unless it has to do with getting in an accident or something. Weird.

That was likely a defective valve to close the fuel tank in a roll-over accident. Not weird, requirement in the FMVSS code.

It happens every now and again, doesn't matter what type of vehicle. It's not common for me but it happens on occasion.

I was filling a diesel VW in the state of Washington once. Click never happened and it sprayed diesel all over my pants, flip flops, car etc. I went inside to bitch at them, and the attendant just said “oh, it happened again?, yeah that pump has been doing that”. Worst part was losing my $70 flip flops, then my ex, not at the time ex, finding out I was wearing $70 flip flops.

    $70 flip-flops........

Walmart has flips for about $5. You could wear a pair and have 13 spare pair in the trunk. You know...just in case.

That’s kind of what she said. But those cheap ass flip flops hurt. I hated those things when I was a kid, never understood why anyone would wear them. Those times are over and I have a newer pair of $70 dollar flip flops that I don’t often wear.

When the tank gets close to full, move the catch on the nozzle to the slower rate notch or hand pump.

topping it off intentionally or because of what is stated here is not good. when i got my 16 the salesman made a point not to top off because gas will fill into some kind of canister gizmo and could result in that it will not start.

I believe that refers to the gas fumes charcoal canister. All of the sloshing causes fumes which are filtered through charcoal and if that gets saturated with liquid gas by overfilling (thus why they say to never overfill) then it causes a too rich condition that takes quite a while to evaporate. My Suzuki DL1000 has that problem regularly so I've learned to pull out the hose right when it clicks off and no more.

Happens everytime on my wife’s 2021 Off Road. All different gas stations. This is obviously a real issue with some of these trucks.

I've never had an issue but have a 2016. I tend to use the autofill flip thing on the pump and never top off. all the pumps I've used have shutoff and the last few drips never spilled out. I do stay right next to the pump

I had a 2019 SR5, now a 21 TRD Pro, and my son has a 2021 TRD Sport. No issues on any of those.

But my wife’s 21 just pours out. The pump clicks, then here it comes. It’s a total mess.

Judging from the varied responses on this thread, it must be a real hit/miss issue.

When you live in flip flops (here in Socal) and wear them 90% of the time you're putting something on your feet good quality slaps are important.

In Alberta we have nozzle locks on the gas hoses.

When you're using the hold open latch, what setting do you use? Typically they have three notches. You should always use the "slowest" setting to minimize vapor. If you're pumping too fast, the vapors can mess with the auto-shut off in the nozzle.

I always and have always used the fastest fill setting. I have never once had a overfill problem on any car including 3 other Tacomas of the same generation.

This definitely isn’t an issue with people not pumping gas correctly. It is 100% something going on with some of these trucks. I called my dealer and they said they’ve had this on RAV4’s recently as well.
