Keep us updated with that your dealer says! I haven’t had time to swing by again since my initial visit..

I have had several fill ups now at a second gas station with no overfill issues. Needed gas in a pinch tonight so I went back to the original station giving me issues to fill up. Had another overfill. I am still not sure if it is the truck or just that station. It sounds like gas is rushing through the pump faster than at the other station in town.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
Somewhat related question... Do we not have metal flaps over the filler where you insert the nozzle? I just filled up today and noticed there was no flap, so I was thinking "Has it always not been there? Was it there at one time and got knocked off and down into the tank? I don't know." :notsure:

My guess is a combination of fast pumps and a defective vehicle.

How many vehicles fill up at that same gas station every week where you invariably have an overfill, with no overfill? Five hundred? A thousand?

The EVAP system in every vehicle built in the past 25 years is designed to make unintentional overfills at automatic pumps not just unlikely, but IMPOSSIBLE. And yet….

I have a service appointment Oct. 20. I will post a follow-up. Until then, we are not filling the fuel tank past 3/4 full.

I've had this on a previous vehicle, but not my 21 TRDOR. Sounds like a venting issue that you might want to take up with the dealer. Try checking under the filler in your truck and try to see if the vent tube is kinked at all, that may cause it.

^^^ I am not sure how accessible that area is without taking the truck apart. My wife drives it daily to her office, but I will get under it with a flashlight this weekend and take a look.

Some gas stations do not maintain their pumps and they’re putting their customers in danger. I’ve had several where the nozzle wouldn’t click when the tank or gas can was full, and another one where I got a pretty bad shock when I put my hand on the side of the pump while filling up.

This GIF looks funny at first, but if you think about that kind of danger she was in, there was a major safety and liability issue for the station…

Do all stations have an emergency shutoff she could hit? What is the right thing to do in this situation?

That’s a great question, usually they are on the building near the main door and people should look for their location before they start pumping.

My wife’s new rdx doesn’t have a gas cap. But it does have little bi-parting hinged flaps that disturbingly remind me of a vajayjay.

In my state there are emergency switches for the fire supression system at the pumps but no emergency pump shut offs at the pumps that I'm aware of. That said, I doubt triggering the fire suppression would be a solution to a gas flood like that one in the clip.

Not sure why people are suggesting it’s a problem with “the gas station’s pumps.” If I was not clear enough: this is happening at different pumps, at different gas stations, and not with our other vehicles at those same pumps and stations.

Just dropped mine off at the dealer. A service tech ended up riding with me to the gas station to replicate the issue..

Thankfully it happened again, right in front of the tech’s eyes, looking completely stumped. He said he’s been working on Toyota’s for 20+ years and has never seen this issue.

He ended up taking a video of it on his phone and said that it’s an issue that may need to be escalated to Toyota, so hopefully my issue helps others out in some roundabout way.

I will post back when I hear back from the dealer..

Just an update from me... haven't had the issue a single time since my thread was posted. I just run the pump on the slower setting when almost full and make sure the nozzles the whole way in.

    So no idea.

I think I’ve only NOT had the issue once since purchasing my OR a month ago. Even if I wasn’t able replicate the issue today at the dealer, I was going to keep returning until I could.

Having to worry about fuel overflowing all over the side of my truck just was not acceptable to me, whether it happened everytime or just every other time.

One should not have to worry about something like that on a brand new vehicle. Just my opinion..

Yup... I agree. Was just giving alternatives if you had to wait for a call from Toyota corporate.

Definitely frustrating- who wants gas in their new Taco? The rubber skirt is to reduce the amount of gasoline that evaporates into the atmosphere. Try NOT inserting the nozzle fully so the skirt doesn’t seal the gas hole. Haven’t had the same problem as you, but if I do insert fully, the pump keeps cutting off.

The official diagnosis is.. a “faulty vapor valve”.

I was told they are going to have to replace the entire fuel tank assembly. Hopefully this is a relief to hear for some of you! It was in fact a fault with our trucks, not the pump or us for that matter..

Looks like I'll be calling the dealership as well then. Hopefully I can still reproduce. I don't enjoy pouring gas all over my truck.
