Did you take a photo of what they showed you? It would be nice to take it in to the dealer and show them...

I can confirm what Rasber said, that valve/flap is stuck on mine as well.

Toyota sent my dealer a new gas tank. No need for additional diagnostics. Makes me think that they know this is happening. I get it replaced next Tuesday.

Yeah, even though I am scheduled to go in tomorrow and forewarned them of the issue, I am planning on having to go the long route. Show them the problem at a gas station (with one of their techs), come back to the dealer for them to order the new gas tank, and return days (hopefully) later for the swap.

I recorded it happening on my phone and showed them the video. That was enough for them to order the parts and swap tanks.

The dealer has yet to even get the truck to the gas station after 3 hrs of looking at it.

I told them what was happening, and they got an engineer on the phone from Toyota. Looks like it is going to go through a large troubleshooting process directed by the engineer. The process of elimination also includes lowering the tank and look for any obstructions in the fuel lines...Not sure how that is relative but fine I'll take the free rental van:bananadance:back home for the rest of the afternoon.

I am surprised they are going to do all of that. Running a camera down the filler neck takes 2 seconds and confirms the issue right away.

    Working on it ...
Don’t know if they re-designed this or not. But on my 2002 Tacoma Off Road 4 x 4 I would always top it off and sometimes it would over fill. Turns out The charcoal filter canister for our EPA programs was getting gas into it and it end up wiping it out. My check engine light went on at about 85,000 miles and it was still on when I tried the truck in with 213,000 miles on it. It was a huge pain in the ass to replace that charcoal canister filter so I just live with it.

Long story short on my 2019 since the day I bought it brand new I try not to overfill it anymore. Pretty much once it clicks off I’ll round it off and I’m done.

I recommended putting a scope down, and they just ignored me.

Update: "The tech found the flapper valve stuck open without having to fill it up"

Could have saved you those hours, but by all means charge someone else. Gonna take a day to get the whole new tank delivered for complete replacement. It will cost me nothing out of pocket, just pride while riding in style with this bad boy for the day.

Of course. Too quick and easy. Gotta milk it

"Sir, we need to contact an engineer from Toyoya to reverse engineer this off the vehicle to assess, and it's gonna take awhile"

Just to note this isn't overfilling, or topping off. This was just a normal pump till it's full occurrence.

It sounds like the same faulty valve a few of us have had. Get the dealer to run a camera and it should be an easy spot for them.

Alright. I got the tank replaced and it fixed the issue.

The dealer said that Toyota started an internal investigation and also something called a "DPR". They saw my tacomaworld sticker and asked if anyone else on the forums had the issue. lol.

Agreed, just so many people are in the habit of topping off to the very top and risk damaging the evap system. I’ve been guilty of doing that in the past myself. With my new Taco I fill to click and I’m done. However, I digress as the original topic was a serious, legitimate issue of a manufacturers defect.

After getting blown off by Weston Toyota — the first dealer I went to (“Can’t find anything wrong with it”) — I took our Tacoma back to Doral Toyota, where we bought it. This time I was armed with several videos of the truck spewing gas out of the filler neck as the gas pump nozzle inside the filler clicked off.

After a few hours we received the same diagnosis as you: Faulty vapor valve. As in your case, the dealer was advised by Toyota to replace the entire fuel tank and filler assembly. A week later, the parts were in stock and the truck was fixed. They also inspected the EVAP system and pulled the charcoal canister to make sure nothing was damaged by the overfills. They reported everything is fine, but the case is documented should any problems with the system develop.

I won’t burden this thread with details of my experiences (both sales and service) with these two dealerships. Suffice it to say I will never, ever, have anything to do with Weston Toyota again. Indeed, this episode makes me wary of the business practices of AutoNation, generally. OTOH, I have nothing but praise for the folks at Doral Toyota.

That is my word of the day. Never heard that one before. I'm 60 and live a sheltered life though. Always fun seeing a word I can Google and see what it means.
