You do know that if we had diff cover access to our rear end, the bling cover game would be a hot TW topic. Thankfully, we have the 3rd member with leaks and whine to keep us busy.

I like Bank's videos, especially about the huge finned flat ones. It's not quite applicable with our axles and still begs the question, which factory statement do you trust? Would you personally fill with exactly the stated amount or up to level relative to the fill hole?

For me, it's fill hole, like ever other dif and lower unit out there.

The same question could be asked of the engine oil, which is the higher measure - the number of quarts or the dip stick?

I fill to the recommended range on the dip stick. Which happens to be about the same amount they recommend on my truck.

I bought a hand pump and gallon jugs of lube. When I'm hand pumping from refilled quart bottles, IDGAF about quantity. The fill hole and my Popeye forearms only cared about that eventual dribble. It was the same situation recently when I checked the level for the 30k service. Dribble is my guide.

Same. I trust the actual measurement but being different by a whole quart is still curious. Wouldn't worry me but it's not like Toyota. The FSM for my 2008 has the expected range down to a 1/10th of a quart. I have no idea if its really that but it's at least the right total number of bottles.

Diff Dipstick? I'm sure we could get a $30 TW GB for one of those. Just needs good crosshatching to be readable.

    j/k!

I thought I was going crazy the first time I changed my oil and checked the dipstick.

    EXACTLY!!!

for the love of all things Toyota,
Fill it till it runs out and put the damn plug back in it. It’s a rear end, not a f’n space shuttle....

In the end, I find it odd that they have several volumes for the different ATs when the MT had an open diff and the eLocker. So, there should have been at least two volumes.

In reality, I don't measure my engine oil either. I just use the OM volumes to determine the minimum amount that I need on hand for the service. Just in case it says, x.0qts, I will have x.0qts + 1 on hand.

The way I see it, these trucks were not designed by Toyota to be maintained by scientists with beakers of oil and exacting measurements. They are meant to be maintained by average jabroni mechanics who will fill to the plug hole out of a pump-barrel.

I've been down that road before. One of our cars and my Ural had the same problem on a polished dipstick and another of our cars had the double nylon bulb style . . . in freaking black!

BTW, a shout out to @MtnFisher . We were chatting about hand pumps and such. If M1 diff lube doesn't convert to bags by the time I'm at 60k, I will make one of these:
