When I changed my diff/t-case fluids, I recall the rear diff taking more than 4.2 qts. I was slightly worried it was overfilled, but 40k miles later there are no issues.

I did something similar. I drilled and tapped a fitting into it and then attached a regulator and 30psi gauge with air fitting. The bottle was cheap from Princess Auto. (Canada's Harbor Freight)

    Nice work!

I've seen Princess Auto talked about. Canadian Tire is also a big parts store, right?

I do miss GI Joes that we had here. It was automotive and sporting goods plus a bunch more. They closed up shop during the 2008 crisis. Thankfully HF is going strong. I'm not sure about their up market push though.

Back when I had an 8.4 axle, I would tip my truck on its side, take an axle shaft out and fill the axle all the way to the top, put the axle shaft back in and tipped the truck back over. Took about 20gallons, but you can never have too much fluid in there because heat. I did come to the conclusion that the diff service caused my doors and bedsides to dent, so you may want to lay a few old mattresses down or something to prevent that.

Yes, Canadian Tire is Automotive, sports, outdoor and retail. They are even trying to move into groceries a bit. We have lost a lost of major retailers the last 10 years and they are working to fill that gap and stay relevant.

Very cool. Hopefully HF stays away from groceries.

We do have Tractor Supply Company which is really cool if you need some light industrial stuff, or baby chicks.

Did you make sure to use 0w-20 for the best mpg?

Edit: or R. Kelly’s urine supplemented with a LSD additive?

I pro tip is to drill a hole in the diff for a zerk fitting and pump the whole thing full of red’n’tacky greaze. Stop pumping when it starts coming out the breather.

Only if you fill it first with acetone and run a 500 mile interval to clean out all the old fluid.

I use a gravity feed system. I put a barrel of gear oil in the truck box and then run a hose from the bottom into the top of the diff. At the bottom of the diff I install a controlled orifice. That way I change the oil regularly as it drips out and I don't worry about being empty for months at a time with the barrel. As a bonus when driving dirt roads the oil keeps the dust down.

Why does this bruise my brain? Good thing most people drive automatics I can't image how hard that would be to deal with another fill plug.

Automatics have sealed transmissions. The fluid is good for eternity. You can make your own drain and fill holes with a 1” drill bit though. Rubber stoppers seal it up nicely.

Drill holes into your transmission and turn it into a boat!

If you place a Tacoma on its side, the differential will hold more fluid.
