Just checked out your pics. Nice job!

Did you pop the resistor off and clean the old stuff?

Just curious, finally getting to do this tomorrow.

The same shit everyone else has.
Long shot but does anyone know what makes the compass the color it is?

Is there a filter in there that tints it?

I wanna change mine from amber to red but don’t wanna dig into it until I have an idea of what to expect.

I'll try, gulp. Do you know if I need to clean the old solder off or anything?

Not sure if I'll be able the pull this off or not

Looks so tedious and I don't want to mess it up

    Ill throw 2 pennies in....

    Need?
    Not rlly

    Should? Yes

U can reflow the existing solder if u need to. I got a cheap ass solder sucker from radio shack and cleaned it up the second time.

    U have a fine tip?

Its dead already, so worst case unless you hulk smash shit, u will be left with it... Not working still.

Its a piece of cake, iirc the screen can be a pita to lift out due to a ribbon cable? Its been a long ass time.

^what he said. It’s really not that hard. Find any old electronic anything and play around. If you saw some of the dummies I work with that manage to make modules work, who wouldn’t worry so much lol.

I'm going with what these guys said.

From what I remember, there isn't a whole lot of factory solder left on the board to begin with. And don't stress about it. As @inwood customs said, this is a no pressure job, as it's already broken. You have all kinds of options if it doesn't go well (which it will). You can send the unit to @Siliconmethod, or even just buy a new unit. There was a woman a few pages back that has a link to one on either Amazon, or Ebay for like $100 IIRC. This is really an easy job. Even for someone that's never done it, I can't see this taking more than an hour from the time you take the unit out, till you get mounted back up. For most it would be 20 to 30 minutes. The bulk of the time would be spent on removal, and replacement of the unit.

Thanks! Nope left it on, just flowed some new solder on both of the 510 resistors. If that lasts me another 7 years, I'll be happy with it :)

LEDs may be amber by default. Doesn't appear to be an amber colored lens. You could probably get a piece of red film (like a light gel) to put over the LEDs. The cover is just a smoke color cover.

Funny you mention this. I did some searching and ordered some of those the other day to try.

Has anyone ever had the 510 break all the way off and disappear? Not sure exactly what to search for online to find one. None of the autoparts or computer repair stores had them in house.

I lost mine. if you look through this thread a little bit a few guys have post up a better resister to replace it with. I replaced mine with the round style and never had another problem after that.

Hope y'all are ready for a laugh. Pretty sure I did everything wrong even though I watched a bunch of YouTube videos  and took in everything I could here...

Most of all, I would like to know if it's safe looking. I was struggling bad and my hands were shaky and pops was watching.

It worked, but I think I had the iron too hot because the plastic is burnt/discolored :(

Getting the thing out and ready to work on was not bad. Only broke one clip that holds the tinted lense cover.

But, it was on a way smaller scale than I had anticipated and honestly I'm afraid to touch anything remotely close to electrical.
