Good point! It was really funny. I could hear that tiny little thing rattling around in the unit when I took it down.

When it goes out again I'll try one of the other style resistors. Was just to scared too try it and chickened out and used the factory one.

U guys dont need to worry bout the shiz people wont see...
U fixed the part that you WILL see.

Until it pops off again, work on temperatures, watch some youtubes, make sure u have thin enough solder.

Just did this a couple weekends ago after purchasing a truck without a working compass/temp. Fixed it up like new despite my lack of solder skills.

This Guy replaces the Resistors with identical factory looking flat ones because the ends wear out from heat and will let go again very neat work for 20$ I was not gonna risk it.bizcard.jpg

Ignore the cow manure from previous owner.
Does anyone know if the whole digital temp/compass module will fit where the sunglass holder is on the 2015 overhead console?

See my post here (which just links back to a couple forum discussions here on TW) https://siliconmethod.com/install-overhead-compass-temperature-gauge-display-console/
In a nutshell, it is possible to install the display, but you will need the entire console as the compass module doesn't fit otherwise. You must also have the temp sending unit wiring installed otherwise the thermometer won't work.

This is pretty buried at this point but thought I would share. I have a 2009 that I couldn't fix and it's supposedly is a different part number than the common one found on Amazon. I just installed one from rockauto.com - drill through with your specific model and year and look under Electrical - Driver information display module.
It was about $200 with shipping/tax but I'll get $110 when I ship the core back. So about $90.

I can't speak to the durability yet, but it worked.

Yeah, I honestly didn't think the solution would be this easy. Solder. Mine didn't even look busted, but that's all it took.

This worked wonders! I've had my truck for 2 years and didn't know it was this easy of a fix. Soldering came out fine with no prior experience using it. Thanks OP!

Ok, so, it looks like a PO may have fixed this previously.....but also, look at that melted plastic! Looks like the screen also has some heat damage. I did this fix on one of my older tacoma's, and I don't recall it being this bad.

Looks like they used a propane torch to solder it. Jeez!

We all have the scorch mark. I don't recall the reason, but it's part of the manufacturing process.

I fixed mine 3 times doing this. First time lasted 1+ year. Second time less, third even less. In the end I just replaced the damn thing! Cut the dimmer wire while I was in there and no problems since.

No, the dimmer does not cause this (poor manufacturing practices by contractor). I cut the dimmer so I can see the display during the day when headlights are on.

Your display doesn’t dim when you turn on the headlights? The display is not connected to the dimming wheel on the dash.

@MyToyTaco ....good grief, I think @Muddinfun is correct about the torch. It appears they used a microtorch to melt the solder and let it dribble onto the board. I guess it could have been worse...
