You should fix your old one and sell it... or just sell your new one... it is such an easy fix.

Shake the console and make sure that its not rattling around in it.

Otherwise, go a couple of pages back. Someone replaced one...

    Good luck man

put a large amount of solder

I solder mine normally and with heat, the resistor warped and went out again, so second time after it was in place normally, I just added more solder all around.

you can find some in electronics store, but you migth be better with a regular 51.0 ohm (the rounded ones with two leads).. SMD will be tough to buy only one!

    http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/916452-res-510-ohm-1-16w-5-smd-0402-rt0402drd07510rl.html

I'd have to check the suze, but this one is 100 for $1!

So my thermo/compass crapped out yesterday (this is the second thermo/compass replacement I've had in the truck! I had two that were replaced under warranty, which has now long expired)... but this time I tried taking the unit out and looked for damage to the 510 solder contacts. The solder *looks* fine.

From what I gather from reading this thread, I should try re-soldering it anyway, even though everything looks fine?? Is there anything else I should look for that may be causing the failure?

Damn, those resistors are a lot smaller in real life than they appear in the photo(!)

yes even if they look fine, one is probably not.. they hat up and warp so the connection on one side cuts.

you can try soldering more over, but the best is to desolder in order to put solder under the leads, then around them

BAM! Success! Thanx for making me take a second look.

And thanx to the original guy who figured this fix out...I'd buy you a beer if I could get it across the interwebz!

Literally, the longest step in this fix was waiting for the soldering iron to heat up. The rest took about 5 minutes.

Fixed mine about a month ago, it was working fine tell yesterday, then went blank again.
Looks like I'll have to solder it again.
This time I'm going to use more solder.
    Anybody else having this problem?
