I've got 98 47 ohm 1/4 watt resistors. Who needs a pair mailed to them?

ETA: replacing the resistors solves the problem. Soldering the SMT resistors especially with an iron seems to lead to replication of the problem within 6 months.

I did this fix a few years ago and it was easy. Still working fine.

It's been about a week now and I still find myself staring at the compass. I'll toss the next round in the mail Monday.

A gentle reminder to the folks about to repair their display boards:

1.) make sure the solder doesn't bridge, especially to the through-hole next to one of the resistors. (the small, round copper areas). *This will create a board-destroying short.* Ensure there is not solder bridge; use a magnifying glass if you have to.

2.) I strongly recommend you follow the DIY guide here. If you don't, your repair is going to fail again at some point in the not-so-distant future.

3.) solder quickly and accurately! Heat from your gun / iron can damage nearby components, and will lift the circuit trace eventually. Press your clean, tinned iron to the junction of the board and resistor and immediately feed solder. You should get a nice shiny fill.

Here's a video on how to pop off the clamshell without breaking any tabs:

    89. 89 47 ohm resistors sitting on my bench, 89 resistors of flow. Take two down, send em around, 86 resistors of flow will remain.

Helpful hint: Assuming all else is good, tinned tip, clean tip (use wet sponge or paper towel), flux on connection/surface, here it is. Add solder to the tip in the amount that will be enough to complete the solder. This obviously takes a little guess work, but not that difficult to figure out. When this is done, you then touch tip to the connection and there will be an INSTANT, transfer of solder to the connection and soldering is complete. It's that quick and if you don't get instant transfer, something wasn't done right down the line.

I just had mine off for compass not working, which I fixed about 10yrs ago, but resistors were connected still. Plugged it back in and it's working. I'm thinking the Arizona heat or connections were oxidized. What amazes me, is how well the plastic has held up in this 2006 that has been in Arizona heat since day one. The only thing that is cracking, is the black plastic surrounding the metal housing of the map lights. But, that is to be expected with the expansion rate of steel being higher than plastic. I used some black silicone adhesive over some of the cracks to help keep it all together just in case. Anyway, with it off, I figured I'd add a 5v lighter adapter up there and tie into the always on power of the map lights. I'm running a short usb to usb female cable out the front of headliner where there is a little notch cut. Will post some pics when I'm done.

Since I had it all down and out, here's the USB 5v hack that's tied into the map light power. I used Wirefy quick splice T tap wire connectors. The cigarette lighter USB adapter is siliconed in place. I also used 2 Popsicle sticks and nylon string so if it has to come out again, it will hang level while the connections are disconnected. You definitely need to use two hands to undo the T tap wire connectors.

Bit late to the party but you still got any resistors?
