I installed the Toyota upgraded replacement I found on Amazon about 10 years ago and it's worked flawlessly since.

No, I found 10 minutes and three dollars in parts was worth the proper repair, haven’t had a problem since.

Do you unplug the unit before soldering?

    All stock, baby!
It would be advisable to do so. Powered off a must. But who wants to be soldering in that awkward position? Much better to have it on a flat surface where you can have it stable, and one hand can be holding solder while the other holds the soldering iron.

Yea, that'd be super awkward to solder it while it's hanging up there lol.

It's a very easy job. No reason to buy a more expensive replacement when this writeup exists. Get the new resistors and don't look back. I have a ton of extras I can even mail people if they want. THe pack of 30 or 40...whatever it is...is more than I'll ever need for the life of this truck.

I have a Weller bench unit (about 20 years old)
I don't like the Butane units, to hard to control the temp
I like the look of that Milwaukee but haven't used it

Just got a 2005 Tacoma about three months ago its 2021 when i got it. Anyways the ceiling temp wasn't working. Not sure how long it was out. So 17 years later and I did the solder of 510 resistor and damn it fixed it. That was an awesome fix. Gotta love this Toyota Nation!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Information is Knowledge, Keep up the great work and information.

From the 50th state HAWAII!! MAHALOS TO YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to express my gratitude to you all for posting these types of fixes. The display in my '08 just failed in the last week and I'm glad I found this post! While re-soldering the 510s didn't fix mine in this case, it was well worth the 15-20 minutes of my time to try. Luckily the boards are just under $130 at the dealership so I'll try that. And I'm pretty sure they were connected well because the 510s got hot even though the display was still blank. I'm glad to be a part of such great community and I plan to be here on a continual basis. Keep up the great work!

First time around I did the classic "tac" solder back into place. Lasted about 5 years to my surprise. Until last week. So I went with the recommended resistors, good as new. Tiny soldering is a pita!

Weller and SnapOn for the cordless one.

ETA: I generally use a hot air rework station, for Surface Mount Transistors it's the right tool for the job.
