You may want to try and replace the 510 resistors. I don't remember the SMT resistor code but you probably could google it. Anyway, if you know the resistor code you can take an ohm meter and check the resistors. Also, while you're in there you might as well check the other resistors.

It could be a cold solder joint. May want to try and remove the solder with a solder wick, then re-solder.

Excellent write up - stumbled upon it, same issue!

I didn't have any visible problems under a magnifine glass, so if you have an issue locating the bad solder joint, you can always strip down to the board, plug it back in and press on each component until you find the faulty one...

Always be sure to ground yourslef properly so you dont damage components with ESD (electrostatic discharge) :)

    Thanks mucho!!!

I just fixed mine. Its been out for months until I saw this posting. The resistors are so tiny and if you dont have a 20/20 vision you may need to use a magnifying glass to see them clearly. Thanks for this excellent write-up. Saved a lot of money.

Finally got around to fixing mine this morning after having it sit dark for months. Gave me an excuse to buy a new soldering iron too. :D

I have a 2008 double cab base model taco. Anybody know if if I bought a overhead temp and compass on ebay, if my truck is prewired for it?

Quick question for you Taco guru's... I fixed my overhead compass/temp gauge and I did as the DIY said and yes it does work but it seems to be reading SE when I am traveling S and it reads S when I'm traveling SW... Any suggestions or is it my imagination playing games on me since I hadn't had my compass working for the longest time... Has anyone else had this problem?

mine was a little off right after I fixed it but it seemed to orient itself. Also, look in the manual for directions on how to do this manually. You have to find a large empty parking lot and drive in a couple of circles...

Thanks tarandus... Seems like that is going to be the way to fix it, I honestly didn't know that those compasses could be calibrated... All I can seem to say to myself now is DUH! I should have looked in the owners manual first... Sorry I'm a newbie at this.

    P.S. Thanks again...

That is exactly what my answer was. It's kinda crazy to drive in a circle, but it works. Simple, free. I had to recalibrate when I replaced the Tacoma's battery.
