Real easy to check! The console is easy to remove. To me it looked like the solder had cracked on at least 1 end of 3 or 4 resistors so I dropped some solder on all of them and it worked. My wife had the truck for a while so I have no idea if it was flaky before never turning on like with you. By the time I noticed it pushing the button did nothing.

In my case, Compass just went off and never turned back on. Obviously Toyota bought the PCB's from a different company who had horrible QC. Main cause is the cold solder joints.

    Don't blame Mexico this time.....

It looks like the board assembler is not at fault here as the solder joints are proving to be good until 2 or more years out. The blame goes to the engineer (like me) that under-speced the wattage of the resistors....they are running too much current to be running this warm and the small solder pad on this wattage of resitstor is certainly going to fatigue and develop a thermal stress fracture and failure.

Just took mine apart and soldered it. Took about 5 minutes and now I have a working thermo/compass. Thanks!

I had the same issue with my Compass/Temp display. It did have a bad connection on the lower 510 chip, I soldered that and tested the connection which was good. Still no luck though. I also noticed a small burn mark on the screen in the lower right hand cormer of the display. I have only found solutions for resoldering the 510 chip. I dont know what else to check...any ideas?????

I wonder if RoHS has anything to do with it. If they're using no-lead solder, that's likely to lead to worse cold joints and stress fractures after many thermal cycles.

Anyone ever measure the resistance? I imagine that they are 510 ohms, but could be 51. It might be cool to try and replace them with two 1000 ohm in parallel for each, effectively doubling the wattage and giving more surface area for the heat to dissipate. Maybe even standing them up on their edges would give more airflow...

I just did mine for the second time. The first time it was the 510 closest to the front of the truck. This time it was the other one. It works again x2.

I googled tacoma compass and temperature problems and found this forum. I signed up and fixed my broken display per the instructions, and it is working again. Life is good. Thanks
