    Hey JDS,

An idea just occurred to me: if you want to send in your display with resistors, I will solder them on and take pictures so that others can see how they go on.

There are stipulations, the most important being that there is no lifetime warranty associated with this repair. This is me doing the repair for a friend, not my business performing it for a client so license/bonding/warranty are out the window.

I suspect that installing your lead wire resistors (and 60/40 solder) will permanently solve the component to circuit board failure issue; but no guarantees. We normally perform the repair using surface mount resistors and heatsinks to eliminate the problem, as described in our website here: www.siliconmethod.com

OK I've prattled on enough about the warranty, there is another stipulation: you have to pay for return shipping, which costs me exactly $5.20. If you decide to do this, pm me or email me at repair@siliconmethod.com and I will give you multiple payment methods including credit card if you wish.

And last item: sorry, this offer doesn't apply to others unless JDS decides not to take it, in which case I will open it up for the first person to respond. If I was rich and retired I would fix these for free all day, but as it stands I am neither, so I have to charge a reasonable amount for my time. (Normal charge is $38 including return shipping)

I own a 2010 Access Tacoma. The overhead console only has map lights, sunglass and garage door opener compartments. Since I don't have a garage and have no need for that compartment I would like to either

    1. install the temp/compass display
    or
    2. install an iPhone connector/holder that would allow me to swing open the door, install my iPhone, and view the GPS on my phone.

    Question

    1. Can a temp/comp display replace the door opener compartment and if so where can I purchase a display?
    or
    2. Is there someone who could retrofit the door compartment to accommodate my iPhone and power connector?

    Thanks.

    Justin,
No worries. The 47 ohm resistors you bought at Radio Shark will work in place of the 51 ohm originals. "parallel" in this case means they go side-by-side. If you look at the excellent pictures you all are taking, you will see that the 510 chip resistors are indeed side-by-side. Look closer and you'll see the electrical circuit just under the green masking connects the resistors to each other. Use the larger 1/2 watt dudes to prevent overheating. The 1/4 watt won't handle as much current, which means they may operate warm to the touch.

    Great tutorial.
    Soldered mine today, 2006.
One of the resistors were completely off.
Heard it rattle around when I removed the console.
The second one was half off.
Added a little flux and re-soldered all contacts.
    Display is working great.
    Thanks to everyone.

I was about to buy a replacement part (83290-04030) from Toyota at $163.00 for my 2006 when I decided to google the part number in case I could find it cheaper. That's when I found this thread. The fix worked like a charm! It would have cost me $235.00 to have Toyota do the job.

Tacomaworld will be my first stop for anything related to my Tacoma. Thanks.

Best and easiest fix there is. Thank you for this thread. I bought the truck without it working two years ago. I just tried it tonight and crossed my fingers before I looked up and bam it worked!! No more useless dead space up there. I'm surprised how many people this has happened to
