There is a guy on eBay that fixes them. He is good. And only charge 24 to Do it. He has a fast turn around time. I had mine done because I broke my 510 resistor and can't soldered with a darn.

That was such a detailed how-to, I was finished in much less time than it took me to locate my solder! Excellent tip about the plastic board cover clips breaking very easily (only broke one lol). Again, THANKS for the great post !!

    WORKED FOR ME!!

Sure enough, one of the 510's looked as if the solder was cold lapped and not making a secure connection. Quick solder job and it works like new. Thanks for the tip!

I really hope that no one is paying $50 bucks for this service.
Let me put this in prospective for you, the Resistor in question is only 0.39 cents and the amount of time it takes to re-solder the the thing is mere 5 minutes. So that means that these people are making somewhere in the neighborhood of $588 dollars an hour. Thats only if people are dumb enough to send in there hardware.

    Just saying :)

Just because some of us are comfortable around electronics doesn't mean everyone is or wants to be. Lots of people would prefer to pay someone else to do things they don't know and don't care to do.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's called division of labor. Sometimes I work on my own vehicle because I enjoy it and know or want to learn what I'm doing. Other times, I look at the time it would take, multiply it by what my time is worth by the hour, and hire it out.

For those people, the option is $800 for the new part from the dealer, or $50 (or whatever) to have it repaired by someone who knows what they're doing. $800 vs. $50 is a no-brainer. The $5 option that you or I would take is just not on the table for them.

after my temp and compass went out a couple of weeks ago I began searching this forum and am surprised this isn't a sticky. After removing and following the instructions in this post it was easy as picking up a soldering iron from Lowes for 15 bucks and fixing the 510 resistor that was literally hanging on by a thread. I have never soldered before and it took me about 20 seconds to fix and see that it is a comfortable 113 in Vegas today. Thanks everyone

By your logic, people shouldn't go to the doctor, either....heck, parts costs are generally zero for brain surgery; so it sounds like you are recommending people should do it themselves.

I replace the resistors and apply a wire heatsink underneath them; and replace the transistors if necessary. Then we test, repackage, and ship out the display. You must not run a business, or you would know better!

Yea, I've seen ads in CL for guys doing this for some amount of money... don't remember how much.

I just finished mine... AWESOME!!! It took me about 30m start to finish (including finding tools and solder iron etc...) very easy process.

My two chips didn't even look like they were disconnected so I plugged it back in and tapped the two of them individually and it came back on and then went off again. In my case it was definitely something with the solder joint on those little chips. I went ahead and resoldered both and BAM works like new.

    Thanks for the writeup. :D

Thanks again for the tip! I used the eBay repair and got my compass / temp back today. Works great and it's nice to have it fixed!

Thank you Secret Squirrel for the post. i just bought my 08 Tacoma and 1 week later my temp/compass display stopped working,. I found this site and this post and was able fix the problem, :). Took my only 10 minutes start to finish, can't believe the dealership would try to charge sooooo much for such a simple fix,. Thank You again.

This one of several times I've come looking for a solution to a problem on this forum. Once again, you guys came through. Five minutes with a soldering iron and we're back in business.
