Damnit.. mine went out. I attempted soldering both, although neither showed they were loose. One of the 510's came loose during surgery and I put it back the best I could. Then soldered the sides of the other... plugged it in and it began to smoke.. My LCD has the burn smudge on the corner as well. Guess i'll take to a professional to resolder and cross my fingers? Those things are so dang small!

    Curt,
Did you happen to see what component let out the magic smoke? Chances are you had a solder bridge that went to ground; usually a transistor burns up when that happens.

As several other people have said the resistor 510 looked okay so I soldered both resisters on both ends. And now it works perfectly. Thanks everyone

Very true, the pictures in the write up make you think it is a much larger item you are looking for. But it is not hard to locate once in there looking at it.

Thanks for the writeup. Buddy just stopped by with his solder pen and everything works. It was hanging at a 45 angle so it was obvious what the problem was. Thing is I wouldn't have pulled it down if it wasn't a common problem. Gotta love TW! + rep your way OP.

Thanks for the write up worked like a charm took me about 25 min total. When I pulled the lens off the circuit board i saw that the screen had a burn mark on the inside near the corner like a light bulb looks after it has burned out. At that point I was not sure i could fix it. Also, both 510 resistors had small cracks in the solder joints. I re-soldered both, crossed my fingers, and plugged it in. When it lit up like normal I gave myself a high five and went on my way.
    Good Work on this tip!

What a great Forum this is. I recently got a 2007 with the Temp / Compass display but it's so dang dim, I can't hardly read it. Do you all think it could be failing? I don't know if they were really bright originally. I'd sure like to make it easy to see.

    Thanks,

    Keith

Thanks Squirrel, another happy Forum reader. I did manage to break one of the small plastic clips on the elelctics cover, but a peice of electival tape holds it on just fine. One of my 510's had fallen off altogether bu I found it on the floor, and resoldered it.
Now I feel ready to take on replacing the sterring Wheel Clock-spring for the airbag; and then, if I can find parts at a wreckers, I will add fog lights, switch and relay to my pre-wired 06 Tacoma.
With that expertise I can then start charging my friends the $84/hr Toyota rate - one sure way to lose friends, just as my Toyota Dealer has lost me as a customer!!!
    Many thanks...

At First the reading was fading, then completely stopped working. I printed out the step by step instruction on how to fix and now it works just fine.

So I originally tried to just re-solder the existing resistors...plugged everything back in, no worky...

Then I found a guy on here who had purchased a bunch of replacement resistors, he said he would be more than happy to send two of them my way in hopes that that would fix it...got them soldered in today.... still no worky...

    any ideas guys?

btw thanks beaver_scott for helpin a forum brother out and sending those resistors my way free of charge...rep for you sir!
