You gentlemen speak the truth. That's why when I fixed mine I wicked away the lead free solder, applied flux, and soldered them in with good ol' 63/27 tin lead solder then cleaned the joints up with alcohol. No problems for 2+ years.

Man, mine stopped working yesterday. Time to break out the soldering iron. I thought it was a fuse, but sounds like this is common.

    Will report back. Thanks!

Well I will be a money's uncle. I took it out, disassembled. (They are not kidding about being careful when taking the smoke glass cover off. I broke one clip.) I did not see any burn marks or disconnections around the 2-510 resistors, but I globbed some solder around all 4 connectors. Hooked it up top test and....

    VOILA!

Yes, it really is 105 in Nashville right now. Put it all back together. All of 15 minutes start to finish. Works perfectly. It is nice to use my EET degree from time to time.

    I LOVE this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :bananadance:

I just attempted the fix. IT'S ALIVE!!! At first, just as everyone mentioned. None of the solder were cracked, but a burnt mark on the display screen. I figure "what the Hell, it's already broken". Soldered both 510 resistors and TW thank you!!!:D:D:D:D:D:cool:

Mine stuck on 100 degrees when I resoldered it. I just drove around for about a half an hour and it very slowly came down into the 60s, which was the temp outside at the time. I think it recalibrates itself.

If you just put it back together, give it a couple of drives to adjust itself before getting too excited about it.

So grateful for this fix! I have been driving around for three years not knowing what temp it is outside and what direction Im going. No more getting lost or worrying about if I will need my jacket or not. Not serious, but I am grateful for the directions on the fix.

I was experiencing the same issue. I found your post and followed the directions. I removed the temp/compass mother board and took it to a friend of mine that works with electronics out of his home. He was able to re-solder the 510 resistors in less than 30 minutes. I re-installed the head unit and it worked immediately. Cost=$20.00.

    Thanks again.

Neat! Neat! Neat! Mine crapped out a few days ago and I was thinking it was a fuse issue. Thanks to The Fix outlined here, I was able to quickly get it working again. TW saves the day!!!

I will try this fix for my truck. I have an 05 Tacoma and noticed that my temp/compass was not illuminated one day and then it worked the next. Fast forward on month or so later and now it does not work at all.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
nice fix. I didn't even add new solder. Just heated what was there and smoothed it with a plastic pick.

I looked at the circuit board a second time and sure enough there was crack in the connection of R510. After 5 minutes of my time it works like new. Thanks again for the advise.

the resistors looked OK, could not see any air gaps, so I heated both ends of the 510 resistors with my iron and re-attached and it is working! It would be nice if everything could be fixed in 15-20 minutes and for 10 cents.
