Mine conveniently went out about a month ago right after the warranty expired. Thanks to finding this thread I got around to fixing it yesterday and am working again. My solder joint also did not look bad either but I very gently pried it with an exacto knife and it was broken. Thanks forum.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
The last time I checked the dealer wants over $330 for the part(s) as described which consist of: circuit card, display board and wire harness.....

One of my chips broke off so I soldered it. I'm not very experienced with soldering so it is not the most high quality job. I'm not sure how hot it got before, but now they get about 160 degrees fahrenheit (had a thermocouple available nearby :)). Should the 510 chip be getting that hot? I can't even touch it!

I just did the fix. Worked great, but I had the door open when I unhooked the two harnesses. Dome light went out when I unplugged the map lights. Fixed the compass/term, but now I don't have any map or dome lights. Did I blow a fuse? Wich one would it be?

:eek:You ....my friend......saved me a bundle. THANK YOU!!!!! It worked. My fuse or resistor completely fell off and if I didn't know what I was looking for it would have been lost. I soldered it back on and covered it with silicone. Thanks again!

I tried that they told me it wasn't covered. I asked if this was a common issue and the service person said "No, not really".......only to find out they have 13 on back order. I mentioned it to a buddy of mine who just picked up his Taco in Oregon with 40,000miles......he didn't even know it came with a compass because it never worked when he got it. That one is now fixed too. Most of the truck is made local or in Canada, that module is made in Mexico which is why Toyota here says they won't cover it. Probably more service BS to get me to walk away and deal with it myself. Mt rims started peeling paint..........."Sorry, not covered over 100,000kms or 60,000miles." I have now bought 3 toyotas and LOVE them but I will NEVER get screwed again on the extended warranty stuff.

Thank you for the write up. I finally had some time to look into the problem today.

Mine went out a few months ago on my 2005 but came back on for a few seconds week after that and been out since. I bought mine early August 2005.

The soldering points looked fine, until I looked closer. It had a small fracture across the soldering. Like many, I plugged the board back in and pushed on the 510 resistors and it lit up. It appeared to be the 510 resistor furthest from the LCD and the side furthest from the button. I went ahead and soldered all four points on both resistors. FWIW, mine also had the burnt corner on the LCD display.

For the clips that come off of the console and gets stuck in the metal bracing in the truck, I reached in and placed a finger over the clip and pinched it out with my other hand. I read on TN a few people had the clip fall into the headliner. There's a little hook like tab on the clip down the center. I bent the tab with a needle nose pliers just in case if I ever need to pull the console down again, so it'll stay with the console rather than the truck.

    Thank you again! :)

I did this this morning, took about 15 minutes and now it works again. I had to purchase the solder kit (17.00) and the torx kit (6.00) from Home Depot. The only other thing I would suggest is to use a magnifying glass because those resistors are so tiny and I couldn't make out where it had come apart but I took Secret Squirrell's advice and I soldered all of them just to be safe.
