How easy of an install is it to add the temp/compass gauge to an 09' without one? Found a used one locally for $20. I don't have the trd package so no gauge but figure that it's gotta be compatible?

If your truck has the temp sensor on the strut in front of the grille it's should be plug-and-play. There'll be a white plug clipped to the top of your garage door opener box that will plug into the gauge. The gauge for 2009 and later trucks is different internally from the older ones and they don't interchange, so be sure you're getting the right one for your truck.

Actually mounting the thing is another matter... The bezel that surrounds the gauge is not available separately so unless you've got mad fabrication skills you'll likely need the whole console. Those are all the same year to year and come up for sale here from time to time. If you can find an older complete console, you could swap in your new gauge and sell the earlier style one to someone who's tired of soldering his. The older (...2008 and before ones) tend to be cheaper.

There used to be quite a bit of discussion on this here. Since the console and temp/compass changed a couple years ago it's not such a hot topic anymore.

Thanks for the thread, just fixed mine. I had one 510 come apart from the board on one side, dropped some solder on it and it will hold both sides in place, The other 510 was okay, since my soldering sucks I left it for now. I did break one of the clips taking the cover off.

I've an '06 and the temp/compass display has been acting up recently, not coming on when starting and going out while driving. I used to be able to tap it and it would come on and it would fade back out. Looks like I have the solder problem as well and will tackle this once we have a decent day outside. Thanks for all the info everyone.

Popped mine off and boom, one side of the 510 resistor was not attached. Thanks for the info!!

Updating my post...did everything suggested here and it's fixed, whew. The 'lower' 510 actually came loose when I applied heat to the right side for the solder. Thanks for the fine info everyone!

How hard is it to take out the cluster? The pics on the front page aren't showing up for me anymore and I need to do this.

Not too hard. Be careful though. I broke a tab on mine when I did it on my 06 that I had. The actual fix is very easy. Just re-flow some solder on the lifted component and fixed.

Been a while since I had my 2nd Gen so I cant remember too great how to take it out. Sorry.

Great Fix. Did this a few months back and everything is still working good. It was broken for a few years before that. Thanks.

    Hi Guys,

Did the solder job today on my 2007 Tacoma and it powered up fine, but the temperature reading is stuck at 20 deg. It was 45 deg. in my garage and it will not move off that reading. I took it out for a drive around the block (2 miles) and it's still reading 20.

Anyone have this happen or know how to fix it?

    Thanks Jim

Started up the truck this morning and it is now working normal again. Must have something to do with runtime or on/off cycles to start displaying the correct temperature.
