After 9 years mine is starting to crap out. I have to tap it for it to come back on.

I just added some more solder to the area where it had burned out. I used the kind to repair eyeglasses and electrical boards with. It has been working for the past year with no problems. Beats paying money for the dealership to do the same thing.

I did this fix 4yrs ago; now doing it again. I looked at the bad solder and saw heat stress. So after doing the fix, I plugged it into the truck harness and powered it on. The two 51Ohm (510) resistors operate very hot to the touch. Anyone else observe this? This is most likely the cause of these solders breaking; especially during the heat of the summer.

If these solders burn off again, I'll be looking into the same 51 Ohm but higher current rating; unless it is a bad circuit design.

This is what I am planning next time around. Are those 1/4Watt or 1/2Watt resistors? Do you know if they were running hot similar to the 510SMD component?

Worked great, took all of 10 minutes to complete. I went ahead and just replaced the resistor with a new one. Too easy.

Well I've seen how to fix this issue, I have a little bigger problem. One of my 510 resistors isn't lose it's gone. So where might I find one?

I found out about this fix a couple of years ago and went ahead and tried it. I soldered the 510 resistors and my temp/compass came back for a few days but disappeared. I went in there again and cleaned up the resistors/board and soldered them. Again, it worked for a couple of days and went again. Not sure whats going on but I'm going to live without, as I am not paying for a dealership replacement.
    Anybody fix it for good?

Check out Post#1745. That's what I did the second time my compass stopped working.

I ditched those 510(1/4W) SMT components and picked up some 51 ohm 1/2Watt PTH resistors. The 510 components were running really hot which was breaking the solder joints ... the 1/2W replacements was able to handle the circuit current better and not get as hot.
I did the fix on 7/24 and drove through and parked under 97F weather and so far so good.

    JVC stereo,
My 08 went out a few weeks ago, my resistor wasn't sticking up or anything but the solder was thin to nonexistent on one side. Dabbed a bit of solder and works like a charm. Thank you for this fix y'all.

Just did this and it worked great. My soldering skills suck big time but it did the job. Just need to calibrate the compass now, my thermometer is off by quite a few degrees but I don't think there's anything I can do about it.

I got my overhead compass repaired after trying and failing myself. I thought mine was totally fried, but they repaired it to factory spec!

After 4 years of looking up at a blank screen I finally fixed it using the excellent instructions posted on the first thread.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
