Well, I failed to fix the connector and the dog got the sensor and destroyed it. Fortunately the local Toyota dealer got me both parts for about USD $28. Animals!

As easy as can be. Took about 15 mins and that included finding my solder. I was a little worried about breaking plastic clips, as I always am when taking anything apart inside a vehicle. But this went really easy. Thanks very much for the instructions. It drives me nuts when little things like this stop working and this was all the info I needed to fix it.

Did this fix tonight soldering the resistor. Before seeing this thread I had no idea what the comp/temp display was.
Had my 05 for about 3yrs never worked. Took a few try's but eventually got the solider to stick.

    Thanks for the write up!!!!

Anyone got a couple new spare 510 laying around? I've fixed mine 3 times now. First one lasted about a year and a half. Second one lasted about 6 months. This last one lasted a week. Thinking it might be time for some new resistors maybe? Really don't want to buy a new board. It's been out for about a year now and it bothers me.

I had the same thing happen. I replaced the board $148 from the dealer:thumbsup: It seams the newer ones have a little higher quality. In other words the resistor is firmly in its place:rolleyes:
    It's been over 1.5yrs!

Just new approach here. My (2006) display has been non-op for months, but didn't realize it until after I wanted to check where NORTH was to orientate myself.

After reading all the posts, seeing the recurrence of the problem in self-repair, and scanning the myriad of current repair service, I decided to see if getting a new one was worthwhile. Details of both repair service and what the "new" part modification were are scant.

Here's some information that might help others deciding to fix, have repaired or replaced. The new part has been modified. The modification looks rather slight, but might be replicable by some tech savvy and steady handed people.

Here's a comparison of the original part to the new part (right side)

Here's a close up of the new part

Most everything looks pretty much the same, with the exception that the "510" resistors have been replaced with 51.1(insert Ohm or upside down U symbol)F resistors, and the perpendicular 181 resistors(?) have been replaced with 121(upside down U or ohm?)F ones.

I decided to replace my old unit with the newer re-engineered unit (P/N # 83290-04030 $118.54). The fix was as easy as could be, and the part was on hand at my local (Melbourne, FL) dealer. Relatively expensive, but I don't expect any recurrence. Amazon and E-Bay had the same part for around $108+, and the most reputable repair service was $42 + one way shipping).

I followed the great advise on this thread to fix my non functioning temp/compass display. When I pulled the unit out and inspected the 510s there was no obvious problem. I dabbed a bit of solder on the sides of the 510s for good measure and reinstalled. Whatever I did seemed to work but I think my issue was with the plastic button that you press.
The plastic button seemed to be compressed against the switch and when I fiddled with it a little metal piece (picture) that goes over the button on the circuit board fell off and I can't figure out how it goes back on the circuit board. The metal piece seems to be bent up pretty well. Now my selector doesn't work but I do t think I really need it as the compass and temp seems to work just fine.

That piece seemo be the surround on the base of the white pin underneath the grey button. Looks like more things might pop off from below soon as that surround seems to keep the white pin and associated (unseen, but the pin seems spring-loaded) spring.

I think my display reboots every time I turn my ignition switch on.

So from reading this thread is it better to go with a newer unit and just replace my old one then to have it repaired? I have a 2006 TRD Sport.

Thanks again for write up on fix. I've had to perform the re-solder 2 more times since it first went, so maybe every 4 years. Good to know there's a new part available that looks a bit more robust as well.

Your call. A quick Google or E-Bay search shows the repair service fees anywhere from $17 to $75.00, usually with free shipment BACK (you pay shipment there). E-bay also showed the new part for around $108. I just felt more confident in the newer part, especially when the local dealer had it in stock, and at a good price. I believe that the re-designed part, with higher capacity resistors, was worth the higher total (initial) cost. I personally have a prejudice over broken parts. if it breaks on me once, then I expect it to break again, if nothing changes.

Some individual self repairs seem to be short-lived. I don't have any experience with the actual level of repair from any of the actual services. A couple of the ones actively listed seem to have very good web pages and I have not heard (read) any complaints that their systems crapped out soon after the repair was done. Most of the services seem to offer the same 1 yr warranty on their repaired parts, just like Toyota on their new part, so that was a wash.

It would be great if someone could tell what the services actually repaired (new model resistors or just re-soldering old ones?). Perhaps someone could also try the new parts, but who knows what else was fixed. I

I'm very happy with the less than two hour total fix, which included, dropping the OH console, getting the part, initial exam (I had the telltale "burn" on the display, but no evident loose resistors or crappy soldering) calling the dealership, drinking a second cup of coffee, driving to the dealership, grabbing the part, checking the differences, installing the part, checking that it worked, disassembly, taking the pics, writing the post, figuring out how to post pics, re-assembly of OH console, dismay that it was not pointing in the correct direction, reading the applicable owner's instruction manual paragraphs, and re-calibrating the compass.

I also would have been VERY happy to pull the part, push a resistor down, tag it with some solder, and have the part work for a couple of years...
