Just did the repair and it worked! Couldn't tell there was any separation but when heating one of the 510 resistors, it moved. Added solder, test and hopefully it's good for a long time.

I'm no pro but patience is all it takes.

 

So the solder popped again as the bottom 51 resistor lifted. But I had remembered to stop at radio shack after Xmas and get some resistors . They did not have any 51ohm 1/2w in stock so I got the 47ohm 1/2watt they had on hand. I'm kind of glad it happened before I forgot where I put them.
Although the top resistor looked good I popped it off and soldered two new 47ohm to the board. If you do not solder much and do not have a vice you need a third hand to hold the board and new resistor in place while you work the iron and feed the solder. Be sure to cover the glass read out with tape or something as flux splatters off the iron like grease frying chicken. The other pics showing the 47omh on the board is what it looks like now with the same results. Works just fine, Temp is accurate and compass points true. I see no reason it will fail again as the soldering job was signed off on by my helper, 30 year master electrician. This repair is a fix. Get a friend to help if you need to with soldering but for less than $2 and an hour of your time....

 

Recently got my truck last week, and joined this forum shortly after. I had no idea what this console did but it did not work when I bought the car. Found this and did the repair in 5 minutes.

I don't see the pics either but you shouldn't need pics. This is a very easy problem to fix. If it's the 510 mentioned in the post then it will be obvious.
Just fixed mine today.

Too easy to fix for me... ive reflowd mine twice and a buddies once.
It takes longer to package up than it does to fix once ya got the console out.

 

I did this fix but it came undone again... haven't taken it apart yet but I'll be the solder didnt hold, can a guy use silver solder on it?

 

-Don’t use lead-free (RoHS) solder, silver solder, or acid core, use 60/40 flux core (or 60/40 and preflux).

 

Another one successfully soldered. Dealer wanted a ton of cash to fix this on my wife's 06. 20 minutes and a couple drips of solder and it works good as new. Thanks!!!

as xJuice mentioned, silver solder is not a good option. 60/40 (lead/tin) is the right direction to go. 90% of what you buy in the store will have flux core...or you can buy a separate flux applicator before soldering.

Note that if you reflow your existing hardware, it will fail again...probably within a year or so. If you do it right and replace the resistor network, it will last a *long* time. Just take care not to bridge the solder onto a thru-board via (small copper pad that Toyota inconveniently placed next to the resistors)...this will destroy the board! Always inspect your work under a magnifying glass prior to power-up.

 

Just did this repair this afternoon. Nothing seemed wrong, but soldered anyway and it worked!

 

I fixed mine within a few minutes using 500 resistors. I can take it apart and show how I did it.... Mine hasn't had a problem since.

 

just a word of advice for anyone who might see this, the cracked soldering on those 510s can be TOTALLY invisible to the naked eye. I have very good vision and even in bright sunlight i couldn't see anything but i figured i had nothing to loose, so i just started soldering. Lo and Behold it now works.

 

Re-Soldering is only a temp fix. You need to replace the resistors. I replace mine with 500 resistors
keep them lifted off the circuit board so they can breath a bit more in summer heat.

 

My first "fix" on my new to me truck. $5 for some resistors on eBay and some careful (though not that pretty!) soldering and I have compass and temp. What a great forum!
