overhead temperature/compass unit went dark

The overhead temperature / compass unit died in my 2009 Tacoma.

Dealer wants $400 to replace it.

Any chance it might be something I could fix myself?

Will give it a try as soon as it warms up a bit (13 F at the present time).

I was never quite happy with the transmission in this truck, always seemed to hesitate from stop.

Or maybe that's the fly-by-wire throttle control...

 

Make sure you get a standard 51 ohm resistor if you want the fix to last.

If you read through the temp/compass fix thread, you'll see that many have re-soldered the existing resistor (myself included), and had the problem come back. Mine has been holding up for 6-8 months now that I re-soldered with a standard style resistor.
