8/14 update - replaced the water pump, thermostat, and fan clutch all oem parts. Put in new Toyota coolant from the dealership. Still overheating

Drain down a bit, remover t-stat, reassemble and run. Do you see evidence of circulation in the rad? Both hoses approximately equal temp when warm? Have you replaced the rad cap?

Mine was like this because of the extra pressure caused by the coolant.
After the compression test, it started to blow the sweet white smoke from the exhaust:bananadead:

Got offered a brand new rad for cheap so I thought what the he’ll and took it. So far no signs over overheating or coolant spray from the resi or bubbling. I think that was it..
    :fingerscrossed:
    Andddd it overheated again

I have been tackling the same issue for a week. Replaced the thermostat, fan clutch, radiator, flushed the heater core, flush coolant, new radiator cap. Still overheats, especially when idling for 30 minutes. Head gasket is good, no milky fluids seen, no leaks, nothing. The last thing that had happened was a spark plug wire melted and I had a misfire in Cylinder 2. New spark plugs all around and wires was the first thing I did.

1996 3.4 4x4. Man I’m at a lost. I’m hesitant to replace the water pump. I’m certain the water pump is functional.

    For 2nd gen
I see RockAuto has a ton of radiators for only $100.
not a bad idea to replace it preventatively.
The end tanks are plastic and over 100k miles/10 years it’s only a matter of time before they burst.

what is the best brand to choose? They have like 8-10 different ones

    I got a low mileage 2015 Tacoma engine for $2700 (3k miles)

    -radiator
    -water pump
    -thermostat
    -plugs & coils
    -oil change
    -coolant change

engine would still overheat even while idling
Constant stream of small bubbles when looking at coolant under radiator cap

pulled the brand new spark plugs to find 5 still white and one Orange/pink and smelling like coolant

dealer agreed and wanted 14k for a new engine or 4K for a HG replacement

^ Blessing in disguise imho. $2700 for a low mile engine is fantastic! You basically did it all once and now you'll be able to drive the Tacoma even longer.

How many miles was on your Tacoma before the HG blew? Do you know why it might've happened? Glad you're back on the road and all figured out.
