My homemade slide is similar. You're angle brackets probably won't break, but I would guess that you'll get a lot of side to side shaking of the fridge when you start hitting the rough roads. Saw that happen with a buddies homemade slide that used something like what you have. I went with some 3/16 angle on mine and it's been solid. If you get more shaking than you like, maybe look at that as a way to upgrade.

For those that Sleep in the back on platforms: how much room do you have between the the bottom of your platform and the top of your Cap?

To provide some anecdotal 1st gen information. I'm avg height and I can't sit straight up. I have to bend my head down pretty good, most of the time I'm crawling around on my hands and knees in there. The platform is right above of the wheel arches.

Just ask Halls and Moose! (5'10")

    http://halls.md/average-height-men-height-weight/

Unless someone gets to it sooner I'd have to measure 1st vs 2nd gen wheel arches and bed deck-roof heights.

My platform to the bottom of the topper is 26.5"

2nd gen truck measured ~27.5" from top of wheel wells to top of cab (generally where a topper might sit)

So they're about the same, my platform is somewhere around 3/4" thick on top of the wheel wells.

sleeping on a platform under a topper just seems like it'd be so uncomfortable and cramped that i wouldn't even think it'd be worth it. why not just ground tent it?

I original made a platform for a 10 day road trip. Girlfriend and I tried it and she was too clostraphobic being too close to the roof of the cap. We ended up sleeping in the bed of the truck. This was great to keep us dry and it was pretty nice to roll into camp, move some items around and crawl into a dry bed. Downside is the cap was hot. No windows on mine, only doors. So that was a down fall. It worked though.

The bed is 6' long, my sleeping stuff is set up all the time, never have to worry about weather, it's more comfortable than a tent because the platform doesn't have rocks and sticks on it, I don't lose any heat through the ground. The only downside is one you'd have in most tents in that you can't stand up to get dressed.

When we get to camp I open the back throw down a chair and watch everyone else set up for 10 minutes. In the morning I throw my chair back in the back, close it up, and leave.

I guess. 6 feet is still not long and there's not much head room. I was just vocalizing(textualizing?) my thoughts that it's odd to me when I see an extensive overland/camping build sans RTT, or even a good ground tent & sleeping pad.

I feel like if anything, the ground would insulate you in most situations. Setup time you cant beat, forsure, but I feel like a few minutes of setup is worth the comfort and space gains. Who knows? I've never used a cap as a tent so idk how to actually compare.

I've been happy with my half-width bed platform setup. I see the pluses and minus to both sleeping in the bed and a ground tent. I'm 5'8", and with a cab height topper I still can't sit up on the platform, but plenty of space if I move down to the bottom of the bed. Really only works for one person though.
