True. I've never been in a situation where I leave camp temporarily. I always either stay where I'm at and relax or plan on camping somewhere different every night.

Thats usually true for me when I'm traveling but if I just go to one of the local parks for the weekend it would be just to leave everything in the main camping area

I suppose I can chime in on this conundrum, I was lucky to find a cheap, new oztent on craigslist.

Struggled with the RTT vs ground tent decision but I'm glad I went with oz

I like keeping it set up, I was able to keep it set up at basecamp in Moab as we ventured out to different trails every morning.
I'm able to keep up to 3 bikes on the tailgate with the tent on the bed bars, a RTT might make this difficult.
And I can pack it away just like all the other camping equipment.

Downsides? It can get dirty being a ground tent so it needs to be cleaned occasionally (probably more often than a RTT).
It's just a hair too big to fit in the bed of the truck. I bought bed bars to keep it on allowing me use of the bed.

I can provide more pictures, set up for "seasoning"

Since I don't want to have to break down the tent to leave camp and don't want to tow a trailer I guess I am sticking to a ground tent/sleeping platform in the bed for now. Unless I get something like a habitat or flippac that is of course, I wish I could throw a van body on my Tacoma platform....

I agree having to pack up the rtt everytime I wanna go for a rip or a night run sucks, but it's also saved me from doing some stupid shit. But I will say this it sets up faster than an awning tent and a guy who frequents trips with me runs one and everytime we've been out its either leaked or he was so cold he had to come borrow my heater and run it all night. Every choice has its down side

Towing a trailer does have some downsides, but to me (and the wife) the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

I think a hardshell would be sweet, but for over the cab wouldn't work very well for myself since I need the entire bed area clear above to fit motorcycles. The rtt is still a huge upgrade over a ground tent for myself since it's easy to pack, I can always leave it on, and it is more comfortable. Cost would be the only reason I wouldn't have gotten one but I got a stupid deal for one that had been used once or twice.

I would love to tow a trailer in, set up camp, and I could do all the runs I want.
Hardshells are awesome but all I've seen are over 3k

My main issue with a trailer is that I'd worry about theft if someone didn't stay at camp. It may not happen just a thought I would have.

Yeah you got a sweet deal, and your right hardshells have a bigger footprint when mounted. You could probably swing it if you really wanted but it would come right to your bars.

Exactly the problem with hardshells, the cost.

Unfortunately no. They have a awesome product that's well thought out, but too rich for my blood
