Haha our last trip was super far and super long and cost very little and we never once said the "o" word. They're not wrong. And I obviously don't check in here often. I just noticed haha.

I've run into a few round the worlders here in UT. The ones who add the O-word to their weekend camping trip are almost always NOT O-worders.

The dude in the wrinkled shirt that looks glad just to be out of the car for a little while...they've seen some stuff.

    Part 2

...And then, a final fly-by. Just a single jet this time, and lower than all the rest - by quite a margin. He came tearing through the southern end of the valley as he banked towards the dunes, the exhaust obscuring the Inyo mountains behind the plane. Perhaps only 60-75 feet above the top of the dunes, the ground shook as he *gained altitude* in order to pass overhead - and then through the gap.

...My loop would take me along an old abandoned mining road high into the Last Chance Range. Along my way, I'd pass through the narrows of a wash and badlands of black shale. I'd find the Last Chance Mine and it's surreal mercury retorts - some of the most interesting mining remains in the valley - and then, I'd skirt along a high ridge past two other mercury mines with breathtaking views of Eureka Valley.

It's just one of the forest service branch roads up in the hills. Super hot and filled with bugs during the summer, and it's really only a spot you go to for a place to sleep. It's a nice view but pretty inconvenient logistically

...Each time, as I'd find another turnaround spot, I'd call Ben forward, the steep mountains limiting the distances that even our ham radios would communicate. The entire road was only 1.7 miles long, but it took us nearly 45 minutes to make it to the end - parts of the drive a white-knuckle experience, at least for me.

The view however - at the mine camp - was incredible.

You'll want to read all about it in the last part of Death Valley Connections

This is perfect. Thanks for sharing. This is the motivation I need to buy a bigger bottle and ditch the 1lb bottles.

Finally figured out a good diy paper towel holder for camping.

1” PVC. 2 caps. 1 coupler. One long bungy. 1 short bungy.

Glue all the joints except 1 cap, just press fit it so you can take it apart to reload.

Cut the long bungy in half. Drill a hole in each cap and feed the bungy through each side and tie off to the desired length. Shorter bungy is just used to keep the paper towel from flapping around.

When not in use, you can push the bungies into the tube up to the hook to store away.

Bungies can be tied off and adjusted to whatever length you need.

That's a lot of work for a paper towel holder. I just use a bungee and done.

That was my initial plan but none of the bungies I have have small hooks on em. They won’t fit through the tubes. I improvised with stuff I had laying around. It took like 5 minutes to make with 3$ worth scrap/spare pvc I already had....

Any of you guys who have an 11# propane take be interested in taking a few measurements for me before I order one?

Interested in the diameter/height of the base of the tank and the height of the actual bottle from the top of the base to the valve port.

Thanks. That gives me a rough idea.

Home Depot has 11# Flame King tanks for super cheap but the closest store to me is 45 minutes away so I’ll just be ordering one

    Mojave East (Mar 2020)

    Preface
You'll note pretty quickly that this trip took place right near the beginning of what has become a worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. At the time of the trip, there had been approximately 600 cases and 24 deaths across the USA. 18 of those deaths were from the Life Care assisted living community in Kirkland, WA. Schools at all education levels were still open, and while some companies were starting to allow employees to work from home, it was not widespread, and definitely not mandated. There were no travel restrictions - or even really talk of such restrictions on a broad scale - in place. We were healthy, and hadn't had any high-risk contacts.

I say this to give some perspective, since things have clearly changed since then.

    Day 1
Leaving home for adventure was a little different this time. Looking back now, as we headed south out of the Seattle area, we were leaving behind what would turn out to be one of the early epicenters of the Covid-19 outbreak, just before more info on the severity would come to light and large-scale cancellations and closures would become part of our world's lives. This was a trip like no other - and not because it would be full of amazing hikes and petroglyphs galore!
